To succeed is to serve
what is success? Success is special and individual for each person or group. For a kid, success maybe means winning a game; for a researcher, success means solving a problem or creating a new device; for a football team, success means being the champion.
Success is not based on monetary gains alone; but on personal belief and value systems, and society. I feel that the definition of success depends on their personal belief and value system. Oftentimes, focus is placed on the end result instead of appreciating the small successes obtained at each stage.
Bertrand Russell puts it that” Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.” Nowadays, in this cutthroat society, people tend to believe that success means earning as much money as possible. As a result, they make every effort and try every means to rise to fame and seek fortune. But in the course of that, we are blinded by material wealth and forget our original virtues, that is compassion.
Compassion is showing sympathy for the suffering of others, often including a desire to help those in need. In my point of view, those who want to be successful must have compassion for others. It is the elementary personality of a man who can be really defined as successful. In my heart, “to succeed is to serve” is not a motion, it’s a state of mind. You have to be compassionate then you can serve others better from the deep in your heart. Take mother Teresa for example, Mother Teresa, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, dedicated the majority of her life to helping the poorest of the poor in India, thus gaining her the name "Saint of the Gutters." The devotion towards the poor won her respect throughout the world and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She founded an order of nuns called the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India dedicated to serving the poor. Almost 50 years later, the Missionaries of Charity have grown from 12 sisters in India to over 3,000 in 517 missions throughout 100 countries worldwide.
Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Whales, is remembered and respected by people all over the world more for her beauty, kindness, humanity and charitable activities than for her technical skills.
Mother Teresa was a powerful woman with her missions and countless acts of mercy. Successful leaders in our world today should learn from Mother Teresa and her countless acts of mercy, which she performed. Often men and women in powerful positions misuse their strengths simply for their own personal benefit. Mother Teresa is a perfect example of a modern day saint. Through her love and guidance of Jesus Christ, Mother Teresa proves to be savior. Now if you compare Mother Teresa to some of today’s wealthy politics and the way they conduct themselves, you will see a great contrast between to two. Mother Teresa does not work out of the intent to profit but instead out of her love to help others, like no other women our society has seen. I hope that every one of us can be a compassionate person who looks out for people even when we are not obligated to do so. Because that it is our responsibility to help others so that we can make a difference in their lives.
