Stanford University has begun an investigation following claims that some of its staff knew long ago of Chinese scientist He Jiankui’s plans to create the world’s first gene-edited babies.
A university official said a review was under way of interactions some faculty members had with He. who was educated at Stanford. Several professors including He’s former research adviser have said that they knew or strongly suspected that He wanted to try gene editing on embryos (胚胎).
The Chinese genetic scientist posted a video on You Tube in November 2018. He claimed in the video that he had used a gene-editing tool Crispr-Cas9 to modify (修改) a particular gene in two embryos before they were placed in their mother’s womb (子宫). He, who works in a lab in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, said the twin girls, known as Lulu and Nana, were born using an egg that was modified. He focused on HIV infection prevention because the father is HIV positive. “Now the father has a reason to live, a reason to work, he has a purpose,” He said.
Editing the genes of embryos, which can change other genes, is banned in many countries because DNA changes are passed to future generations and could have unforeseen effects on the entire gene pool.
China’s national health commission ordered officials to “seriously investigate” He’s claims. Shenzhen’s health and family planning commission said it was investigating the review process around He’ s work.
Research institutions connected to He have distanced themselves from him. “This research work was carried out by Professor He Jiankui outside of the school,” said the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. It called his research a “serious violation of academic ethics (道德)”.
1、What did He Jiankui claim in the video posted on You Tube?
A.He was wrong in trying gene editing on embryos.
B.He prevented the twins from developing cancer.
C.He modified a gene in Lulu and Nana’s embryos.
D.He was influenced by his research adviser in Stanford.
2、Why is gene editing of embryos banned in many countries?
A.The effect of DNA changes on the gene pool is unforeseeable.
B.It causes disabilities to the gene-edited babies.
C.The future generations will rely on gene editing.
D.It will affect all the healthy genes of the embryos.
3、How did the university in Shenzhen react to He’s video claim?
A.It ordered investigations to be conducted.
B.It called the incident a big shame for the nation.
C.It declared not related to He’s research.
D.It kept a distance from the media.
4、Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The USA Bans Gene-editing
B.What are the Ethics of Medical Treatment?
C.Scientists Find the Idea of Gene-edited Babies Crazy
D.Stanford Investigates Links to Scientist in Gene Editing

Scientists think they have the answer to a puzzle that confused even Charles Darwin: How flowers evolved and spread to become the most important plants on Earth.
Flowering plants, or angiosperms, make up about 90% of all living plant species. In the distant past, they outpaced (超过) plants such as conifers and fems (针叶植物和蕨类植物),but how they did this has been a mystery. New research suggests it is due to genome (基因组) size.
Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Earth was dominated (支配) by ferns and conifers. Then, about 150 million years ago, the first flowering plants appeared on the scene. They quickly spread to all parts of the world, changing the landscape from muted green to a variety of colours.
Why angiosperms were successful and diverse on Earth has been debated for centuries. Charles Darwin himself called it a“mystery”, fearing this apparent sudden leap might challenge his theory of evolution.
Kevin Simonin from San Francisco State University in California, US and other researchers wondered if the size of the plant’s genetic material—or genome—might be important. They analysed data held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on the genome size of hundreds of plants, including flowering plants, gymnosperms (a group of plants including conifers) and fems. They then compared genome size with anatomical (结构上的) features.
This provides “strong evidence”, that the success and rapid spread of flowering plants around he world is due to “genome downsizing.”
By shrinking the size of the genome, which is contained within the nucleus of the cell, plants can build smaller cells. In tum, this allows greater carbon dioxide uptake (摄入)and carbon gain from photosynthesis, the process by which plants use light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.
The researchers say genome—downsizing happened only in the angiosperms, and his was “a necessary condition for rapid growth rates among land plants”.
1、What do you know about angiosperms?
A.They are dominant plants on Earth.
B.They are rare plants in South Africa.
C.They are topical plants in South Asia.
D.They are extinct plants in the world.
2、It can be inferred that .
A.Charles Darwin was confident of his theory of evolution
B.Kevin Simonin is probably an American biologist
C.Kev in Simonin works in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
D.Charles Darwin succeeded in figuring out the flower evolution
3、Which of the following contributed to the success and diversity of angiosperms?
A.The weaker conifer.
B.The larger nucleus.
C.The smaller genome.
D.The stronger cell.
4、Which of the following is the best title?
A.How Angiosperms Conquered the World?
B.W hat Puzzle Confused Even Charles Darwin?
C.Why Gymnosperms Were Successful on Earth?
D.When Angiosperms Outpaced Conifers and Fems?

There is an interesting story about how Pablo Picasso, the famous Spanish artist, developed the ability to produce an amazing work in just minutes.

Picasso isn’t the only 7 man who worked for decades to master his craft. His 8 is typical of many creative geniuses. Even people of considerable talent 9 produce amazing work before decades of 10 . A recent study 11 the ages of Nobel Prize winners, great inventors, and scientists. The researchers found that most groundbreaking work 12 during the late thirties — at least a full decade into any personal career. Even in the fields of science and maths, creative 13 is often made after more than ten years’ work.
These findings 14 the work done by previous researchers as well. For example, a study 15 at Carnegie Mellon University by professor John Hayes found that out of 500 famous musical pieces, nearly all of them were created after ten years of the composer’s career. In later studies, Hayes found similar 16 with poets and painters. He began 17 this period hard work and little fame as the “ten years of 18 .”
