第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,每小题 2.5分,满分 50分)
B
A
I was talking to a friend about plans for her preschooler Cathy. Their home language is English, but my friend'
s father is French, and I wondered if she would letCathy attend the local French immersion(沉浸式)
kindergarten.
High school graduation requirements
To earn a high school diploma, students must meet the following requirements.
Compulsory credits
She surprised me by saying that her dad advised against doing that, saying,“You have a very bright little girl
who's curious about everything. French is only one subject. You don't need to make it the center of her education
for the important early years of school."
*
4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)
3 credits in mathematics (at least 1 credit in
Grade 1I or 12)
* 1 credit in Canadian geography (Grade 9)
* 1 credit in the arts
*
* I credit in health and physical education
* 1 credit in French as a second language
* 0.5 credit in career studies
Yes,there are many benefits of speaking more than one language, but that doesn't mean it's always a good
idea to make your kindergartener receive an immersion program.
*
*
*
3 credits for group 1,2, and 3 courses
2 credits in science
If you look up "second language learning", you'll see much about the advantages of being bilingual (双语
的),mostly written to advertise language schools and maps. But if you dig deeper, you'll have trouble
finding solid research into the advantages of second language learning, other than in older age groups where it
does have strong cognitive(认知的)benefits.
1 credit in Canadian history (Grade 10)
* 0.5 credit in civics and citizenship
Optional credits
Students must earn 12 optional credits by successfully completing courses offered in the school's program
and course calendar. Optional credits may include up to four credits earned through approved dual(双倍的)
credit programs.
My clinical experience with kids is consistent with my friend's father's observation and with th finding of the
British Academy that second language learning can be great for kids, but isn't always. I depends on a lot of
complex factors.
Note:Beginning with students that entered Grade 9 in the 2020-2021 school year, students must earn at least two
online learning credits (compulsory or optional).
For some young children, immersion classes in French or other languages can make school more
interesting, enriching their lives and enlarging their sense of the world. Children who enter school with strong first
language and mathematical skills can enjoy learning another language, finding new ways of understanding and
thinking about what they have already known.
The literacy graduation requirement
The September 2022, the literacy graduation requirement was introduced and it became effective
immediately. Students graduating in the 2022-2023 school year and beyond are required to meet this requirement
to earn their high school diploma.
For others, these programs can be curiosity-crushing. I've worked with many very smart young kids who are
deeply frustrated at school because their scientific, technologica1, or mathematical interests far outperform their
ability to discuss their enthusiasm in a new language.
Community involvement
Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the
requirements for a diploma.
When looking for a school for your preschooler, consider their individual learning needs, strengths and
challenges, and look for what you think might be the best match.
Students who are looking for community involvement opportunities should:

Inflation(通货膨胀)is the word on everyone's lips, as our coffers (金库) take a hit and prices
seem to rise ceaselessly.
Engineers at Princeton University have measured the cooling benefits of a simple solution for beating urban
Meanwhile, inflation remains stubbornly high in many developed economies despite the interest rate rises
designed to bring prices down. The latest figures for the U.K. Consumer Price Index(指数)(CPI)for May
rose by 4% from the previous year. Some economists have found themselves considering a surprising potential
contributor: music concerts. But what do concerts and the economy have to do with one another?
From top singers to famous bands, Klaus Baader, global chief economist at Societe Generale, has tickets to
see various artists this year. "One of the things that struck me as odd is that acquiring tickets for these concerts
nowadays means people have to tighten their belt for a while," he said. "And a concert trip doesn't end with a
single ticket. It's also related to Coca-Cola or hot dogs, the prices of which are always hiked up when shows take
place, let alone the accommodation" he explained.
heat: reflecting sunlight back from where it came by equipping building walls and roadways in urban centers with
retroreflective(反光的)materials.
"With climate change and the increasing frequency and persistence of extreme heat events, more people in
the U.S. die from extreme heat than from any other weather-related disaster-heat kills more than tornadoes,
tsunamis, and hurricanes combined," said Elie Bou-Zeid, professor of civil and environmental engineering.
Several technologies have been raised to fight against the issue of urban overheating, including cool
pavements and roof coatings. However, when sunlight hits these cooling technologies, it can be kicked back in
any number of directions instead of in one focused direction, which means that highly reflective materials could
have an opposite result if applied because sunlight could be reflected onto the ground, walls, and even the passers-
by.
Take the Renaissance World Tour by a famous American singer-songwriter whose first stop was in
Stockholm in May as an example. "In the Swedish May inflation numbers, hotel prices rose more than what is
usual for May," said Filip Andersson, from Danske Bank. "Hotels in the Stockholm region were reportedly fully
booked the weeks around the event and prices thus skyrocketed. Due to a third of Sweden's hotel rooms being in
the nation's capital, prices rose dramatically on a national scale."
"Actually, retroreflective materials are already used in transportation, where they are commonly found in
road signs and paint to improve nighttime visibility, but an important question is how efficient we can make them
and whether we can engineer them to have the performances we want," said Jyotirmoy Mandal, assistant professor
of civil and environmental engineering.
Economists have nicknamed the phenomenon: “tourflation", wwhich has stimulated analysts to give a lot
of thought to the upswing. "The concert market is booming. Understandably, this relates to supply and demand
forces-consumers are most interested in making up for their time lost during the COVID-19lockdowns," Baader
explained. He also pointed to changes in how musicians make a profit."Artists’models have changed from
making money by selling CDs towards earning revenues mostly form concerts,"Baader added.
The impact of concerts on inflation might be short-lived. In Sweden's case, Andersson believes the
normalization of inflation levels will occur later after the concert.
Unlike common highly reflective materials, retroreflectors can reflect incoming sunlight with limited
scattering(散射). Consequently, most sunlight hitting a retroreflector on a building wall or city street would
be directed back in the same direction it came from-and out of the urban canyon. In this way,the retroreflectors
can release the sunlight that would otherwise be stuck in the urban canyon and exacerbate the urban overheating
problem.
Ultimately, they want to create a set of guidelines for policymakers, planners, and materials engineers. If
you're an urban planner, for example, and you know the latitude of your city, the width-height ratio and the
direction of your streets, you can easily use their results to pick the suitable surfaces for applying these
retroreflective materials and estimate the cooling benefits you might receive in doing so.

C.The unpredictability of climate change.
D. The necessity of temperature monitoring.
