If a wheelchair malfunctions, it’s like a body catching a cold. For Zhu Siwei, a “wheelchair doctor”,
diagnosing (诊断) these issues has become second nature.
At 33, Zhu brought his expertise to the world stage in the summer of 2024 at the Paris Paralympics (残奥会),
where he worked at both the Paralympic Village and competition venues. As part of a technical team, Zhu offered

service to athletes and officials from around the globe, keeping their equipment in top shape.
Zhu describes how each technician on the team brings their own expertise — some specialize in sewing,
others in welding (焊接). “Many of the technicians from other countries have years of experience and a deep
understanding of wheelchair repair,” Zhu says. “It’s a rare and valuable opportunity to work alongside them.”
In the Paralympic Village, Zhu sometimes found himself going beyond his official duties. When a motorized
suitcase that an athlete was using for mobility wouldn’t charge, even though it wasn’t his responsibility, Zhu
stepped in to help solve the problem. He could sense the athletes’ appreciation after fixing their wheelchairs, their
gratitude unmistakable in their eyes.
With a decade of experience in wheelchair repair, Zhu has observed the continual development of the
equipment used by disabled individuals. As the wheelchairs change, Zhu recognizes the importance of improving
his repair skills alongside them.
Wang Tiegang, Zhu’s colleague during the Paris Paralympics, has also witnessed firsthand the advancements
in equipment for people with disabilities. “We’re gradually moving toward high-tech solutions,” Wang says. “This
year, we’ve integrated 3D printing technology on-site, and new wheelchairs are becoming lighter. The demands on
welding techniques are also growing, so we’re committed to ongoing learning.”
This year, Zhu has taken on a new initiative for individuals with disabilities. “When a wheelchair breaks
down, it’s often much more challenging for someone with a disability to go out and find a repair shop compared to
able-bodied individuals. They also tend to have their own circles,” Zhu explains. “We teach them simple repair
techniques, enabling them to assist one another with basic fixes.”

Tilapia (罗非鱼) skin is rich in collagen (胶原蛋白), a protein that helps build and repair tissues. Because of
this, tilapia skin has become popular in medicine. Researchers have used it for various treatments, including helping
burn victims and fixing problems related to the stomach and heart.
Inspired by colleagues in other medical fields, Mirza Melo, an eye doctor for animals in Brazil, decided to try
using tilapia skin to treat eye problems in dogs. She focused on eye problems like corneal ulcers and perforations,
which are common in dogs with short noses. “These dogs have eyes sticking out from their faces,” she says. “So they
get injured often.”
Normally, doctors treat these eye injuries by placing a piece of horse placenta (胎盘) over the damaged area to
help it recover. But in 2019, Melo tried using tilapia skin instead. She successfully treated a Shih Tzu (a species of
dog) with a severe eye injury.
Brazil’s Burn Support Institute and the Federal University of Ceará, which started the Tilapia Skin Project to
treat burns, supported her work. With their help, Melo developed a special membrane (膜) called the acellular dermal
matrix (ADM), made from pure collagen taken from tilapia skin.
Collagen is known to help cells grow and repair tissues. Tilapia skin has a high and consistent quality of collagen
throughout the fish’s life, while the quality of horse placental collagen can vary depending on the horse’s age and
weight.
So far, Melo has treated over 400 dogs using tilapia skin. The dogs showed no pain or infection after surgery
and healed quickly with minimal scarring. Melo is now planning to use this technique on cats and is even discussing
how to adapt it for treating human eyes, which are very sensitive and difficult to treat.

When caught in the rain, we have all run for cover—often to a nearby tree. On the way, we step over short-

running down tree bark during fog events and captured it for drinking, washing and agriculture. If more
contemporary hydrologists (水文学家) had watched the raking of fog by trees, forest managers may not have
logged the Bull Run Watershed, which reduced local rainfall by 30%.
Water science faces criticism because of “techno-optimism that tries to solve all problems despite not asking
fundamental questions”. In fact, this issue extends beyond water science. An interdisciplinary research team led by
John Van Stan from Cleveland State University argues that scientists should go beyond the laboratory to directly
observe weather phenomena. The researchers insist that hands-on observation of storm events is crucial in
comprehending the complexities of wet weather.
“
Natural scientists seem increasingly content to stay dry and rely on remote sensors and samplers, models, and
virtual experiments to understand natural systems. Consequently, we can miss important stormy phenomena,
imaginative inspiration, and opportunities to build intuition—all of which are critical to scientific progress,” said
Van Stan’s team.
This type of “umbrella science”, they warn, can miss important localized events. For instance, in describing
rainwater’s flow from the forest treetops to the soils, the authors note that “if several branches efficiently capture
and carry storm water to the stem, rainwater inputs to near-stem soils can be more than 100 times greater”.
Likewise, water vapor (水蒸气) clouds trapped beneath forest treetop covers may escape remote detection, yet be

sensitive to scientists on the ground. On a broader level, these oversights can affect ground Earth system models,
which often underestimate forest treetop water storage.
Direct observation, however, has gone beyond making up for the shortcomings of “umbrella science”. Van
Stan and colleagues see core value in first-hand storm experiences—not only for natural scientists, but also students
studying the impacts of climate change on ecosystems.
