Jack went into a shop. He wanted to buy a nice-looking watch very much, but the owner of the shop asked five hundred dollars for it. “The price is high,” Jack said, “Can it be a little lower?” But the owner answered: “Sorry, sir. It can’t be lower. The watch is of great quality.” Jack was so upset. He looked the watch over and over again. At last he gave it back to the owner and left the shop.
Jack continued walking on the street. At the next corner, he saw a young man also walking on the street with a watch in his hand. Jack recognized it was that nice-looking watch he saw just now. “Do you want to buy a fine watch, sir?” the young man asked Jack in a low voice, “It’s only a hundred dollars.” “The price is rather cheap,” Jack thought. So he paid at once and went back home with the watch. He told his friend about the nice watch.
His friend took a look at the watch and started laughing. He said, “You are a fool. This watch isn’t worth even ten dollars. I’m sure the shop owner and the young man planned this together.”
