五、阅读理解
Brandy was an old dog. When her owner John died, the dog stayed near the house and waited
for her owner to return. Some of the neighbors(邻居)left food out for Brandy. Although they
thought the dog was friendly, they didn’t care much about Brandy.
One day, Brandy walked by a neighbor’s house and began playing with 4-year-old Adam.
Adam’s mother didn’t like the dirty dog at first. But seeing her son having fun playing with the
dog, she decided to let Brandy stay.
One afternoon, the boy’s mother left Adam at the door to play when she answered the phone.
When she returned, she couldn’t find her son anywhere. The mother was frightened and worried,
so she called the police at once. They looked for Adam for six hours but failed to find anything.
Then, someone said he had heard some strange noise coming from the forest near the town.
So they all rushed to the forest. There they found Adam sleeping against a tree. Brandy was
keeping Adam there while one of her own legs was still above a deep hole next to the tree.
People believed that Brandy had followed Adam when he walked away. Seeing him in danger,

The family took good care of Brandy for the rest of her life.
