I switched to a flip phone (翻盖手机). It vastly improved my life. I felt empty and frustrated at
how much time I spent on my smartphone. So I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phone
down to the basics. Social media was the first to go, then email, then news apps, and then even internet
browsers.

I long considered switching to a flip phone, but I always found an excuse to stay. Ultimately it
was two of my students,15-and 18-year-old sisters, who pushed me over the edge. Word spread
around school that they had bought flip phones. If they were brave enough to take the plunge, I could,
too. I spent $9 on a flip phone, plus $120 for a year of unlimited talk and text on a new number. For
the last five months, I haven't carried a smartphone with me, just my flip phone.
This is the charming, romantic side of owning a flip phone: more conversations, more eye
contact, more connection. The separation between work and life is much more noticeable. I don’t
overthink work emails all day, since I no longer carry my work email in my pocket. I am living more
like my creative, curious, phone-free children.
This all sounds wonderful because it is wonderful. And now it's confession time: I still have my
smartphone. As it turns out, our addiction to smartphones is not just on an individual level.
Intentionally or not, we have built structures that depend upon smartphone access, making it an
essential feature of modern life. While most of the flip phone inconveniences are charming, some of
them are so frustrating that they make you want to pull your hair out.
Despite that, I will continue to use a flip phone as my primary phone so I don’t have to carry a
smartphone with me. And I will continue to evangelize for it. I hope many others get flip phones. We
will all be better for it. If nothing else, it'll be nice to have more people to talk to in the grocery line.

Findings show rainfalls are changing annually. Over the past two years, there has been a three-month
delay in the rainy season and new tender shoots that lemurs consume for nutrition are appearing in
January and February—14 days after the first rainfall, says Patricia Chapple Wright, a primatologist,
anthropologist, and conservationist at Stony Brook University. “Lemurs eat a food source that is very
adaptive,” Patricia Wright told PBS NewsHour. “It’s able to stand climate change, but the lemurs,
unfortunately, can’t adapt quickly to this changed cycle.”
Since baby lemurs are born in November, the delayed rainy season is dangerously affecting the
survival of them for lack of nutrition available for both the mothers and offspring. “This is why, for
extreme feeding specialists like the greater bamboo lemur, climate change can be an unknowing killer,”
Wright says. “Making the lemurs rely on bamboo stems(茎) for just a bit longer may be enough to tip
the balance from existence to extinction.” The lemurs’ highly specialized teeth are also similar to the
pandas’ teeth. Both are the mammals able to chew up stems. But this diet can’t last for more than a
season or two because the stems can wear away their teeth.
The researchers believe that climate change is affecting the lemurs. The fossil record shows that
the lemurs once lived throughout the island. Today, the mammals are cornered on the eastern side,
where the dry season at present is the shortest. And if people continue the deforestation practice in
the area, the lemurs will have nowhere to go.
The situation is serious, so Wright and her colleagues plan to create bamboo corridors within the
rainforests, which will provide available bamboo to eat. They want to work with local villagers to
plant more bamboo and manage automatic watering systems when dry seasons last long. They also
want to build the local economy by allowing people to harvest a part of bamboo while the rest remains
with the lemurs, so people will be interested. Wright’s conservation plans include moving lemurs
back to other places on the island as well.

Want to know what is coming soon to a cinema near you? Probably not a 1.5-hour-long movie,
as in the old days. On October 20th comes Killers of the Flower Moon. At nearly three and a half
hours, its length is nearly double that of the average film last year. Even movie fans struggle to
concentrate for that long and some viewers even nod off.Afterwards there is a mad dash for the toilets.
When does watching a film become such a slog?
The Economist analyzed over 100,000 feature films released internationally since the 1930s, the
start of Hollywood’s golden age, using data from IMDb, a movie database. The average length of
productions rose by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47
minutes in 2022. For the ten most-popular titles, the average length grew to around two and a half
hours in 2022, nearly 50% higher than in the 1930s.
One driver of this trend is that studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual
property (知识产权), but they are competing with streaming platforms for eyeballs. The hope is that
a spectacular, drawn-out “event” movie will draw audiences away from the small screen and into
cinemas. This approach has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame, Marvel’s three-hour superhero
masterpieces, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019. Last year long movies series made
up most of the highest-grossing films in America.
Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing influence. Who would
dare tell the likes of Mr. Nolan to cut out his masterpieces? Moreover, streaming platforms, which do
not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause whenever they like, may attract
big names by promising them sufficient fund and creative freedom. Netflix funded and released three-
hour The Irishman in 2019, a film that would have benefited from a decisive editor, Irish or otherwise.

8. The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___.
A. pleasure.
B. effort.
D. feast.
C. conflict.
2
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. The average length affects the popularity of films.
B. Great advances have been made in film industry.
C. Hollywood starts a golden age of feature films.
D. The average duration of movies has stretched.
0. What sets the trend of longer movies?
A. Competition for the target audience.
3
3
B. Thirst for more classic productions.
C. Influence of streaming platforms.
D. Preference for decisive editors.
1. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Movie Enthusiasts
C. Movie Production
B. Movie Marathons
D. Movie Influence
