Introduction The emergence ofe-commerce is creating fundamental changes to the way that busines is conducted. These changes are altering the way in which every enterprise acquires we creates shareholder value. The myriad of powerful computing and communications techno] enabling e-commerce allow organizations。streamlinetheiibusinessprocessespnhance customer serviceand offerdigitaj)roductsand servicesThis shiftin underlyingnarketing fundamentals is now the drivingforce that is luringmany organizationto embrace e-commerce. However, as they are learning, organizations must proceed wi th caution, a road toe-commerce is littered with failed initiatives. A plunge in the share prices o companies sent the tech-heavy NASDAQ index into almost f ree fall; down over 70% of recordhigh of 10 March 20. Though an economic slowdown was apparentl^likelyone thing was painfully clear; most Internet “pure plays” could not find sustainable pr( operatingDnly as e-commerce organizationsimply by excellingin the management of technology, informationa,nd the consumer behavior.Similarlye, stablishecdompanies that viewed e-commerce as a stand-alonappendage to theiibusinesswould be lesslikelyto succeed in these efforts. Therefore, it is our contention that firms must clearly re ♦e-commerce initiatives an integrapart of theirstrategicbjectivesIn additionwe propose thatfirms thatcarefullyevaluatetheircustomer and competitorbase,as a partof strategic thinking, will reap more benefits. In the process of forming a corporate strategy to respond to the challengesof environmentalchange, normative thinkingrequiresthata firm should analyze itsindustry forces and value-chainactivitieisn order to identify)pportunitiefor IT innovation. Furthermore, itshouldexamine assetsresourcesand competency of the staffind identify those mechanisms that confer a distinctive advantage over their rivals. Choice of ap strategycould then lead to superiorperformance. In the case of e-commerce, firms implement ing such initiatives should carefully analyze external f orces, internal res( theiicore competenciesThe outcome of thisprocessshouldbe reflectedhrougha tight integration between corporattrategy and e-commercThis study f ocuses on this outcome and its relationship wi th corporate perf ormance. Bettman and Weitz [6] argue that the CEO’ s letter, which is a standardized component of the report, provides comparable a objective data on an organization than would interviews. Pfeffer [39], recognizing the theCEO’s letters a sourceof “objectivdataon organizationhas calledfor increased researchuse of annual report data. The study uses the CEO’sr laesttienput to address the following questions: 1. I s the importancee-xfommerce to corporatetrategyreflected in improved corporate performance? 2. Does a firm’ strategicrientatiowith respectto e-commerce have an impact on its performance? 2. Background and propositions 2.1. The perceived importance-commerce The emergence ofE-commerce has created a novel marketplace. However, definitions of what constitutee-commerce vary [35 and 44] Extantstudiehave referredo the term “e-commerce marketplace”eitherfrom a system-oriente[3] or a market-structure perspective [33]. Bakos argued that it is the electronic market systems that create a buyers and seller converge. Malone et al. referrecto itas a correspondin图overnance mechanism. Zwass [51 and 52] proposedan architectuteiatembraces the aforementioned perspective's two components of an e-commerce structureE-commerce relatedT, in this f ramework, serves as the inf rastructure that leadse-oommerpe.eAt)fthe top level, resultinfrom the impact of e-commerce operationis the issueof governance mechanism. Support for electronic marketplaces and electronic hierarchies can be foun bottom level.In-betweentheselevelsthereare applicatiohayersthatprovidevalue-added activities wi th respect to inf ormation sharing, bus iness transactions, and relations! Thus, e-commerce includesiot only buying and sellingoods, but also variousprocesses withinand across organizationWe define < e-commerce as the use of computing and communication technologieto engage in a wide range of activities and down the value-addedchain, both withinand outsidethe organizatio[1].It is widely argued that e-commerce relatedT, such as EDI, EFT, electronimessaging, sharedcorporateiigital libraryetc. could enhance both organizationaelfficiency.nd effectivenesIn terms of efficiency benefits,e-acommerce application can generate internal efficiency and exteri coordination through changes in intra- or inter-organizational integrative processes bef ore the risee-fommerce, and particularly the Internet, companies engaged in electro commerce usingelectronidatainterchang(EDI) to improve theiroperationadfficiency. Today, Internet EDI can further integrate and enhance an organization’s operational e Rigginsand Mukhopadhyay [43] using Chrysleras a case, has shown thatthetotabenefits provided by electronic integration are both tangible and significant. Effectiv由enefitsof qe—commerce, technology are reflectedn the use of the extended information exchange network to create organizational value. Because of the addressabi responsiveness[14] that characterizthe system, e-commerce could increasean organization's ability to sense and respond to the tmarkeltLe®etei(ng and disseminating market information throughout the organization. With that information, the organizati accurately assess or stimulate dHamOredt and searcfor new markets. Making the right decisioiwould in turn have a strategicmpact thatcould change the relationship* the organization with its business rivals and customers. Despitethe benefitprovidedby e-commerce, however, adopting e-commerce does not ensure competitive advantage, because the technologies are open and available to comp [31].Economic impactsdo not emanate from IT investmentsdirectl^ut throughthe value created by the interaction of the IT assets wi th the “complementary asse]t.s” of th Researchers [7, 26 and 30] propose that the ability to mobilize IT resources in conjun other resources is criticato superiorperformance. Therefore, corporationsthat see e-commerce integratewith itsstrategicrientatiowould be more likelyto leverage complementary assets and achieve efficiency and effectiveness benefits. In other words to recogniz©-commerce as a part of corpoisattrategyis more likely to result in isolated initiatives responsesto competitivepressuresthat are less likelyto leveragethe full complement of organizational resources. Therefore, we propose: Proposition There is a positive relationship betwessnp^rcfdirtnion of the importance of e-commerce as reflected in corporatetegyand firm performance. 2.2. Market orientation Market orientatiocnenterson an organization-widgenerationand disseminatioonf, and responsivenessto, customer intelligenc[27]. Narver and Slater [34] widen this conceptualizationf market orientatiobny breakingit intoitsthreecomponents: customer orientationc, ompetitororientationa,nd inter-functioncaolordinationT.hey argue that the market concept is not limited to customers but should include a competitor orientation words, a market orientated company would collect, dispatch, and swiftly respond to e both customer' s needs and rival'. Inler-functional coordination is, in fact, a functi intelligentgsnerationdisseminationand responsivenessThis study adopts Narver and Slater'conceptualizatiout only focuseson customer and competitororientations they argue, market-oriented firms would continuously acquire, process, and disseminate kno\ about market, products, technologies, and business information. Therefore, the third b component is a part of the central essence of the first two.
