B Ludwig van Beethoven was born over 250 years ago. His music is still played daily around the world. His melodies(乐曲) are often used in movies, TV shows, and even cartoons. Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he’s probably best known for his nine symphonies(交响曲). When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for the 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few “sketches”- short bits of written music. In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal was to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony; they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write. That’s where deep learning came in. To train artificial intelligence(AI) to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. By feeding the program all of Beethoven’s music, AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he reused simple melodies all through a piece to create a theme, or how he moved between different parts of the symphony. Other members of the team studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches, and worked to figure out what Beethoven was planning to do. Where in the symphony did he plan to use each little bit of music that he left? Finally, AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra(管弦乐队). So Beethoven now has the 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance. 2 4. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To introduce Beethoven’s music career. B. To highlight Beethoven’s achievements. C. To provide background information. D. To bring back Beethoven’s last symphony. 2 5. How can AI help to finish the 10th Symphony? A. By studying Beethoven’s other symphonies. B. By collecting all of Beethoven’s music. C. By identifying Beethoven’s notes and sketches. D. By finding the musical patterns of Beethoven. 2 6. What do we know about Beethoven’s 10th Symphony? A. It is suitable to be played by an orchestra. B. It requires at least 40 players to play. C. It has to be tested by Beethoven experts. D. It is a long piece of music without any theme. 7. What is the best title for the text? 2 A. Revival of Beethoven’s Symphonies by AI B. Rewriting of Beethoven’s 10th Symphony C. Performance of Beethoven’s 10th Symphony by AI D. Completion of Beethoven’s 10th Symphony with AI’s Help C Chinese linen, or xiabu-literally “cloth for summer”-is a traditional handmade textile made from China grass, also known as ramie. Being hailed as the “king of natural fibers”, the linen has unique properties such as wear-comfort, good durability and good rinsibility (可漂洗性). It’s also delicate, yet not as fragile as silk. A variety of xiabu was developed in what is now Chongqing’s Rongchang district during the Han Dynasty. Royals and nobility during the Tang Dynasty liked wearing the linen during the summer months. It was one of the first products to be exported from the district in the 20th century, with an annual output of around 700,000 bolts(匹). In 2008, Rongchang xiabu craft was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. According to the district’s commission of commerce, the annual demand for xiabu in the international market reaches around three million bolts, of which 40 percent are sold to the Republic of Korea. Over the past three years, 1 3 xiabu manufacturing companies in Rongchang have exported goods worth more than 50 billion yuan. “ It takes more than 10 procedures-including ramie fiber reaping, thread twisting, weaving, bleaching(漂白) and dyeing-over a period of about 20 days to make a piece of ramie cloth,” said 37-year-old Ma Linqin, a municipal-level inheritor of Rongchang xiabu craftsmanship. To produce a fine cloth, a xiabu craftsperson has to weave thread up and down over 2,400 times on a 1 .5-inch-wide loom(织布机), with both hands and feet working in smooth coordination. This is the most important and intricate part of the whole process. “Although it’s time-consuming and labor-intensive, we need to recognize that xiabu is a long-term necessity in the marketplace,” Ma said. According to the local cultural and tourism commission, Rongchang xiabu has been made into more than 1,000 products, including dresses, suits, decorative paintings, embroidery, bedding, tablecloths, towels and bags. “Our products are especially favored by those who pursue a higher quality of life, and the consumer group is becoming increasingly younger. Sustaining intangible cultural heritages requires responsibility and perseverance,” Ma said. 2 8. What information can we get about xiabu? A. It has a lot in common with silk. B. It is made into clothes for all seasons. C. It is a traditional machine-made textile. D. It is comfortable to wear and easy to wash. 2 9. What can we learn about the market demand for xiabu? A. It is expected to become greater. B. It is limited to specific regions in Asia. C. It is going beyond the supply largely. D. It is declining due to the popularity of other fibers. 3 0. What does the underlined word “intricate” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Smooth. B. Efficient. C. Complex. 1. What can we infer from Ma Linqin’s words from the last paragraph? D. Creative. 3 A. Xiabu craftsmen are highly respected. B. Xiabu is well recognized by the market. C. The high prices of xiabu products are reasonable. D. Young people are encouraged to learn xiabu craft. D Adrenaline(肾上腺素), also known as epinephrine, is a type of hormone that is released whenever a person experiences fear, anxiety, or stress. In fact, as soon as your brain senses danger, it tells your body to start making adrenaline. The hormone moves through your bloodstream quickly and jumps into action by binding itself to molecules called adrenoceptors, which can be found in cells in almost every organ. When a large amount of the chemical is produced all at once— more than 1 0 times higher than when you’ re calm-it’s called an adrenaline rush. That flood has lots of noticeable effects, and each one is intended to protect you in a dangerous situation. Your pupils(瞳孔) will widen to let more light into your eyes so that you can see more of your surroundings. Your brain begins to work faster to draw up a plan. Your heart beats more rapidly and pumps extra blood to your muscles, also delivering an increase of oxygen from your lungs. All of these effects accumulate into nervous, anxious feelings. That’s why it might seem as if your head is spinning, your thoughts are racing, or your heart is beating out of your chest. Despite what superhero stories might tell you, there’s not much evidence that the hormone gives you extra strength. Instead, experts think that great achievements-like a parent lifting a car off a trapped kid-happen when some kind of psychological switch gets flipped ( 按 动 ). That is, unless you’re under serious pressure, you might underestimate what your body is really capable of. In general, adrenaline rushes have prepared animals for stressful situations for millions of years. The glands(腺) that produce the stimulating chemical are found in any species with a backbone. Even dinosaurs likely had the stimulating stuff pumping through their veins(静脉). Early people like Homo erectus and Homo habilis probably felt fear and nervousness as they wandered through the prehistoric jungles. When a pop quiz makes you sweaty today, you feel the same tension that helped your ancestors 10,000 generations ago defeat fierce lions. 3 2. What can be learned concerning an “adrenaline rush”? A. It controls the level of the hormone. B. It makes passive feelings disappear. C. It leads humans to feel energetic. D. It results from a stressful situation. 3 3. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed? A. By explaining concepts. C. By describing details. B. By providing exact data. D. By making comparisons. 3 4. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Adrenaline gives extra strength like in superhero tales. B. Great achievements are due to psychological switch, not adrenaline. C. A parent lifting a car off a trapped child is impossible without adrenaline. D. Adrenaline rushes have only been important for animals recently. 3 5. What’s the author’s attitude to the role of “adrenaline rushes”? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) D. Ambiguous. 根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Feeling some anxiety is part of the human experience and helps us challenge dangers and obstacles. But if it affects us so much that we are limited and avoidant, we know that certain habits we have allowed to develop aren’t serving us. 36 Reject uncomfortable feelings The modern world takes feelings far too seriously. 37 We feel nervous or bored, and our immediate impulse is to get out of there fast. This resistance to our own feelings emphasizes those feelings, making us more anxious. The solution? Be okay with not always feeling great. Allow processed food to make up more than 20% of our diet Anything refined, processed, and far-removed from its natural state promotes an imbalance in our bodies. We’re more likely to experience what feels like anxiety if we’ re out of equilibrium. 38 3 9 When we think certain things repeatedly, we reinforce those things and create our realities. The idea that other people are capable of affecting our self-worth is a belief that most humans entertain, and it makes us fearful. When we challenge this belief, we see it isn’t true
