、Unit 2 Career and Success 1、 Listening There are many reasons why people leave their jobs.Maybe a higher salary offered in the new job, possibly it's just a career advancement, or it could be because they can't stand their management, and they believe their supervisors are doing a bad job about it

、My next guest says that bad management is the main reason why people leave their jobs. He's Stephen Taylor, he's a lecturer in management at Manchester Metropolitan University. It's good morning to you! Interviewer: This is an extraordinary finding that basically you are saying poor management and s

、upervision, finally people said, "That's enough, I'm off." Interviewee: That's right; I think that's very right. We've interviewed about 200 people in depth about their last job-move.We've asked them to tell us in detail why they left their last jobs. And that's the main finding of our research, and

、it's sort of a hidden reason.I think a lot of organizations don't understand, don't realize how important this is.But certainly most people, the majority of people, that was the primary reason they left. Interviewer: Now when we talk about s-poor supervision or bad management, we're obviously talk

、ing about more than, say, sexual harassment, abuse, bullying and that sort of thing. You are really talking about they are not doing their job, absolutely, not supervising. Interviewee: Absolutely, There are examples of bullying, and just unpleasant treatment, abuse of power and so on, but they're

、 a minority. It's much more common to find examples of ineffective management of sweeping problems under the carpet, not listening to grievances, not listening to people, just not managing in effect actually. Interviewer: And that, of course, those managers would say that they are suffering the sam

、e problem from their own managers. Interviewee: That's very tricky, we have also interviewed supervisors themselves and we get the same thing from them. They will complain about the area manager and so on and it goes up the hierarchy. Interviewer: Is that endemic in the system of bureaucracy in t

、he corporation? If it's so common and in so many countries, what can be done? Interviewee: Well, a lot can be done?I think it's a hidden reason, I don't think it's so much endemic in the bureaucracy.I think they just don't realize because when people leave a job, that's not the reason they give. Th

、ey are not honest. They say they are leaving for more pay or they are leaving for personal reasons, or something of that kind. So I just think they don't actually realize how important this factor is. Because a great deal can be done about it, well, you can select supervisors on their supervisory sk

、ills, rather than for their technical skills; you can give them training in basic people management skills. Interviewer: But., you see, the problem with that, Steven, is every time when anybody sits on a course in "People Management", "Human Resource Relations", "Managing Your Staff", everybody sa

、ys "What a load of rubbish." You know, bunny rabbit's gone mad. Interviewee: Well, maybe that's the problem, it's not rubbish. It's very very serious. It's costing industry millions and millions of pounds a year because people are leaving. They have trained them up, they selected them, they've spen

、t huge amount of money getting them in there, then they walk out the door. It's really about time people took the issue a bit more seriously. Interviewer: And a final thought, when are you next going to look at this again to determine if there've been any changes? Before you resign? Interviewee: We

、ll, that's right.I think it will be an on-going study and I've certainly got a long way to get to it.I want to look at various different professional groups and see how they vary. That's what I would like to do next. Interviewer: Well, Steven, assuming you haven't resigned to go elsewhere, please d

、o come back and talk more about it, absolutely fascinating, thank you very much indeed.

2、 Reading In our human nature is a desire to achieve, to be successful. We all want success. How do we measure success? Can a person have too much success?A little story about a Mexican fisherman illustrates success in a simple lif
