　　Nowadays, people' s living standard has been improved greatly. Consequently, more and more people in big cities have their own cars, and there are still more people who are going to buy cars soon.
　　There are some advantages to have a car in big cities. Firstly, a car makes one arrange his transportation more freely. You can go out whenever you like. In addition, a car makes it easier and more comfortable for traveling. With a car, you do not need to wait for the bus in the icy cold in winter or under the burning sun in summer.
　　In spite of all these advantages, too many cars in big cities will cause some problems. First-ly, there may be more traffic jams since there are more and more cars. Secondly, more cars will lead to serious air pollution. Besides, parking will be a big problem since parking spaces in large cities are limited. All in all, if conditions permit, owning a car in big cities can make our work more efficient, and our life will become more pleasant as well. The Importance of Self-Confidence
　　No matter what we do, we should have confidence. Without confidence, it is almost impos-sible that one would ever achieve success, especially when he has some drawbacks or is faced with hardships, which seems to be self-evident. However, in real life there are many people who are always complaining that they are not able to do something or that it is too difficult for them to do something. Perhaps some people believe so, but for many others, it only shows that they do not have any confidence in themselves.
　　Some people are frustrated even though they have the ability to do the things. There are, a-mong others, two main reasons. Firstly, they do not have a clear and correct understanding about themselves. Secondly, they sometimes just overestimate their difficulties which are in fact not that difficult.
　　To build up confidence in oneself, one should have the right attitude towards his own abili-ties. We should never underestimate our abilities and overestimate the difficulties, but should be-lieve in ourselves. Just as the proverb goes, "Where there is a will, there is a way. " Only with self-confidence can we achieve success.

An Important Thing to Change My Hometown 
In the southern suburbs of Guangzhou, there stands a small village, that is my native place. My hometown used to be a beautiful places with its green hills, a wild field, and clean stream around. However, with the growth of population and increase industrialization in the Pearl River Delta areas, a shortage of freshwater has becoming a serious problem in my hometown. 
It is well-known that fresh water plays a very important part in our daily life, more and more fresh water has been used in people’s living, washing and entertainment. Moreover, many lakes and rivers, been used in people’s living been polluted by dirty water from the pipes of factories in most parts of the world. 
As for me, I think we have to develop ways of saving water and decreasing the factories in my hometown. It is possible, on the other hand, to use the waste water again after it has been purified in the plant. Any possible solutions should be tried for the survival of man in my hometown.

I admire those sports stars not only for their excellent skills but also for their spirits. In fields, they struggle to show their best performance. In daily life, they spare no effort to help people in need. They display the values—like honesty, kindness and strong will in both fields and daily life.

Choosing Careers
Talking of choosing careers for children, there are two different opinions. 
Some people believe parents should arrange future career for their children, because children may be too young to take a sensible decision on their own. Moreover, children need help or guide from adults. 
Children, however, think in a different way. In their opinion, being an adult means thinking independently and t good care of oneself. It is a sign of being mature for children to choose their own careers. 
For my choice, I agree with the latter, though I can fully understand the parents’ love towards their children. Anyway, children have their own life and parents’ interruption may hinder them from growing up and becoming responsible for themselves. Therefore it is sensible to let children make their own choices for future career.

To Work or to Study Further? 
To work or to study further? Probably different people have different answers. Some believe that they need work for money and self-improvement, while other think that to study further for better work and more money. As far as I am concerned, I like to work instead of study further, because work can help me learn how communicate with others in order to build my network of social relations, and nowadays communication skills are as important as intellectual growth to compete in society. 
By means of good communication in the society during work, we can show our wit and abilities to impress others, thus more opportunities can be created. Good communication can build good cooperation. By talking and interacting with others, we can exchange information, and know what strengths each can bring to the table. Maxim Gorky once said that when work is a pleasure, life is a joy; when work is a duty, life is slavery, and I agree with him totally. I shall take any job that makes me happy and requires my qualifications for the bright future.

To Learn or to Practice 
To a college student, there are many advantages of having a part time job. First, a part time job may offer you an opportunity to display ability and apply what you have learned in school. Secondly, part time jobs in business can develop a sense of competition, which you need in future. It increases your confidence in yourself because through the work you can realize your own value. Besides these, it helps students develop a sense of independence, and helps relieve your parents’ economic burdens. With the money earned, you can buy whatever you need for your study. However, some people don’t think so. They think park time jobs often distract students’ attention from their studies It is evident that you can hardly focus your attention on your study if you work several hours a day on the job. 
Because of the advantages and disadvantages involved in working part time, you have to strike a balance between your study and the job. Study is your major task while a part time job is a minor one though work experience is desirable.

Nowadays, most of us have realized the importance of a university education. Whit the help of the university education and a degree, they can easily get a decent job and a brighter future. 
From my perspective, a university degree is essential but not everything. It can provide students with many opportunities that they never would have had if they drop out at high school. But a degree is not a determining factor to one’s success.

High-speed railway in China 
High-speed railway is booming in China since it was introduced in 2023. It accounts for more than half of the aggregate operation mileage around the world now. 
High-speed railway brings much convenience to our lives, and even changes some people’s lifestyle. For instance, Li Ming lives in Hangzhou, but worksr in Shanghai, and he commutes between these two cities every day. It is almost impossible or troublesome for him to manage it before high-speed railway was built. Another good example is that people spend less time on the road when they go back home for the Spring Festival, which gives them more time to be with their family.
