I am a student at Leeds University, completing a degree in history. As a member of the Student Union, I am actively involved in the day-to-day running of student life. The Student Union takes responsibility for organizing student events such as concerts and sports days, as well as funding-raising actives. I play a large part in organizing these events. These responsibilities test my leadership as well as my organizational skills.
For many years I have been interested in journalism. While I was at school, I helped to run the school magazine, and in my first year at university I often contributed articles to the Student Magazine, “Juice”. Running and writing a magazine requires the ability to produce interesting, topical article while working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. The success of the school magazine shows that I managed to develop these abilities at a high standard.
In my free time I enjoy watching films. I am a member of a local community film club and helped organize a short film festival last year. I contributed my own short video about student life to the festival, which was very well received.
I believe I have made a positive contribution to university life, as well as to the local community. I am confident and competitive, but also a good team worker. We each have a memory. That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart, but some people can only remember things when they do them again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.
A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. In school it is not easy to learn a foreign language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too. But your memory will become better and better when you do more and more exercises.

When we moved to China seven months ago from the States, we were very worried about what we would be eating, and how we would live. We never thought that we would fall in love with the Chinese eating habits and style. We also never imagined that we have lost 80 pounds! We thought we should share some of our tricks with you. Here is the Chinese Diet---five easy things you can do to lose weight.
Use a smaller bowl - much smaller
Go into your cupboard and find your smallest bowl. Now that will be the bowl that you will eat out of. By doing this you actually pick much less food than you are naturally served.
Vegetables are your main course
For example, you might have one plate of a cucumber dish, one of corn & carrots, and then another with ribs. Find a few dishes that your whole family love and rotate(轮换) those.
Cut down on your meat & dairy
We eat very little meat. So do most Chinese. We eat very little dairy. It was hard at first. Cut it down and try to limit it to eggs, milk and yogurt.
Use chopsticks to eat
We love eating with chopsticks and wonder why we didn’t use them more at home. You eat a lot slower, A LOT.
Introduce rice and noodles into your meals
A Chinese diet introduces a lot of rice and noodles. So our daily diet is not different, we eat rice and noodles 3 times a day.
We wish we had known these simple tricks back home that make such a difference in our waistline.

For many people the subject of hiccups(打嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.
His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry’s parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him, “When I began to hiccups, I drank a glass of water but that didn’t do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me shock but that didn’t work, either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn’t find anything wrong. “They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”
Harry was very lucky. The world record holder is the American farmer Charles Osborne, who hiccupped for sixty-eight years. He stopped in 1990 at last, but nobody knows why.
