Music: it was about two years ago. One day, I was taking a stroll in the campus and they were playing some music on the campus radiobroadcast. Then suddenly I heard that English song. I could not help falling in love with it the moment it came to my ears. It was the first time when I listened to the song and I had no idea of the name of the song or the name of the artist, but for the next three minutes, I was completely lost in the song. Then I searched the Internet and knew that it’s name was dying in the sun from an Irish band called the cranberries. And till this day, I still keep the song in my IPod and still listen to the song from time to time. Every time I listen to it, I have that special feeling, I mean it’s like closing my eyes and lying in the sun. And it’s like being in a dream when someone is whispering in my ears and trying to comfort me and my soul, and in that dream I just feel so quiet and peaceful, so tranquil and blissful, like it’s paradise. I think it’s mainly because that the song itself is so beautifully written and performed, and the singer just has that pure and fantastic voice to make me feel so.
A place: an enjoyable place I’d like to describe is a river in my hometown, and it’s called White River or Baihe in Chinese. The river, which flows through the centre of the city, is extremely wide and clear with several bridges built over it, connecting two parts of the city together. I knew the place well because my parents would often take me there on weekends when I was a child. There are always lots of people there. Some of them are swimming in the river, some sitting in a small boat, enjoying the splendid views, others just sitting quietly alongside the riverbank, fishing or talking. Sometimes even weddings are held there, and brides and bridegrooms take photos there, and people there always give their blessings to them. There is a park on one side of the river bank where lots of kids would go and play and a sports centre where people go and take exercises. The reason I think the river is an enjoyable one is because it’s so beautiful, and when people go there, they can always relax and have a wonderful time.
A restaurant: here I’d like to describe one of my favorite restaurants. It’s called New Taste Restaurant. The restaurant is situated just opposite to the front gate of my college on the other side of the street. And my mates and I would often go there. It actually looks rather ordinary from the outside but inside it’s really a great place to sit and enjoy our meals. Ever since the restaurant opened one year ago, my mates and I have become many of the regular customers there. Every time we eat there, they always have some new dishes for the customers, and we always try their new specialties. Once we tried a new dish called Lemon Chicken, which was great. And we’re really fond of the place a lot for a number of reasons. First, the restaurant is rather clean and they have nice windows and chairs that are comfortable to sit in. Second, the food there’s excellent both in its looking and taste, but above all, they offer foods with reasonable prices, which makes it popular especially with our students. And third, they have good services. Waiters and waitresses are always polite and smiling all the time, making you feel just like home. So every time we go there we always have a good time eating and talking.
A good student: In this part, I’d like to describe a good student I ever studied with. There was a time in high school when I had some problems with my maths, which made me extremely upset. Then the new term started and I got Harry, whose math was the best in class, sitting next to me. Harry was a very kind guy and offered to help me with my math. You know, one interesting thing I discovered about Harry was that unlike the rest of us, he never sat there studying all the time yet to him, getting a high score in math was always such an easy thing to do. I was so curious about it that one day I couldn’t help asking him about his secrets to study. He told me that what he did was simple. He always previewed what was to be taught prior to each class, marking the parts that he found hard to understand. During each class, he paid full attention to the teacher’s lecture and especially to the parts previously marked. After the class, he would review what had been taught and do proper exercises on math. I think what he was doing was to turn the state of passive learning to active learning. Because he knew what was to be taught and listened to the teacher with a clear purpose which was to look for answers to the questions he couldn’t understand. All these greatly enhanced his study efficiency. And I think that’s what made him so successful in his study.
A bad weather: Here I’d like to say something about a bad weather I’ve experienced before. The snow started in January in 2023 right before the Spring Festival that year and it was the biggest one I’ve ever experienced in my life. For me, going to school every day actually proved e a big problem for me. In order to protect myself from the heavy snow and sever cold, I had to wear really thick clothes which made me look just like a bear. What was worse, because the ground was covered with heavy snow, riding a bike was no longer feasible for me, and so I had to walk to school every day. And even so, I had to watch my steps because it got extremely slippery everywhere. And the snow actually became a disaster to the country. Railway was greatly affected by it and many migrant workers who wanted to go home for the family reunion were held up at train stations. Most highways and roads got ice on them and proved extremely dangerous for vehicles. News about the disaster was reported on the television every day and the central government took immediate actions to tackle with the problem. Army was sent to remove the snow and aids such as food and temporary shelters were provided to those trapped at train stations. It was really an unforgettable experience to me.
When you got angry: I’d like to talk about an experience when I was angry. It was in August this year and I got a part time job as a salesperson in a shop that sells desks. And their products proved rather popular with the customers, especially with parents because they were designed to ensure that kids who use them would have correct sitting position when they study. One day a young couple came into the shop and said that they wanted to buy a desk. When they asked me the price I told them that the one they wanted to buy was 260 Yuan. As soon as they heard it, the lady just jumped up and kind of shouted at me. She was like” What? Don’t you ever try to cheat me! I was here yesterday and you told me it was only 160!” I was confused about it at first and told her that the price was indeed 260 and never 160. I also told her that we did have a desk which was 160 Yuan, but apparently they were completely two different ones although the two desks looked really similar to each other. I suggested that maybe she got them confused. However, no matter how hard I tried to explain, she just wouldn’t listen and kept shouting at me, saying I was a liar, a cheater. I could not bear the insult anymore and just about to lose my temper when my boss came. After knowing what was going on, he apologized to them first and then explained that the desk they inquired about was really 260 and I was honest to them but we could offer them a discount if they really wanted to buy it. Finally the couple bought the 260 desk for 220 and left without an apology, not even a word about what just happened. And it took me quite a while to calm down and got back to work again.
A garden: I’d like to talk about a park I like the most, it’s called Green Park. The park is located just a few blocks away from where I live and I always go there on weekends with my mates. When you enter the gate, you will see a fountain just in front of you. And the fountain is especially beautiful and pleasant in the summer because when it’s hot, it gives out cool wet air around it which is really lovely. Alongside the main road there are lawn with flowers and trees. There’re small roads zigzagging deep into the woods and comfortable wooden benches for people to sit on and rest. The park is really quiet place and perhaps the only thing you can hear when you take a walk in the park is birds singing, which is rather pleasing to the ears. Every time my mates and I go there, we would take a walk in the woods or sit on the benches and chat for a long time. Sometimes we would talk about sports and music, and sometimes we would talk about more serious matters like the future or life. The reason I like it is because it’s a really beautiful with the trees and flowers. When I see those things I see Mother Nature and I just feel peaceful in my heart. And also maybe it’s because the place is quiet and there’re no unnecessary things like noises. And I can really calm down to think seriously.
A book\A film: I’d like to talk about a book I really enjoyed reading. Several months ago I started to read the novel called Forrest Gump and it took me a week before I finished it. I loved the novel so much that I later I read it over and over again. It is about the legendary life of a man named Forrest Gump. Little Forrest had an IQ of only75 which was lower than a normal kid’s he had problems walking properly. However his mother always told him that he was no different from other kids and encouraged him in ways that he could easily understand. Then by chance Forrest’s legs recovered and he it turned out that he could run really fast, which earned him a ticket to the university where he played for the university rugby team. Then after graduation Forrest joined he army and fought in the Vietnam War during which he got lots of honors and after the war he bought a ship and began to catch spawns. And again he was successful. And later he got married with his childhood friend Jenny. The reason I really enjoyed reading the book is first, the book is quite interesting to read. In the book Forrest was always lucky and it just proved his mother’s words ‘stupid is as stupid does’ And second, the book itself gives me much to think. Seriously it makes me think about my own life, about destiny, whether or not each of us has a destiny and it makes me think about death which no one can escape. It also teaches me that instead of complaining about the unfairness in life, one’s really supposed to make full use of his own god-given talents and be perseverant in his pursuit of success. And I reckon that’s why I enjoyed the book so much.
A TV programme: i seldom watch tv, because i have a computer and most of my free time is spent in front of the computer browsing the websites and chatting with my friends. anyhow, i do have a favourite tv program and it ’s called “happy dictionary”. it's a quiz show. in this program a wide range of prizes is given to the winners. the host of this program is my favorite her name is “Wang xiaoya”. she is an incredible host. in the beginning of the program they will introduce the 5 participants and then they will be asked a question, the person who answers the question correctly and quickly will be given an opportunity to take the quiz, the quiz is divided in to three or four stages, i can’t remember this exactly right now, anyway in each stage you will get a prize. the prizes are decided by participants, e.g. a computer, laptop, digital video camera, a free package holiday, you know things like that. there are there questions in each stage, and the way the host asks these questions make them more difficult. for example after you have given an answer she will ask you are you sure or not, and the person starts getting confused and changes his right answer to a wrong one, it’s funny and interesting, i really enjoy this part. the participants can get help from others for answering the questions but its limited there are only three ways and if you have used one then you cannot use it again these three ways are calling a friend by phone, asking the audience and letting the computer erase one of the wrong answer. the entire questions are multiple choices. this program is an hour long and is usually broadcasted at 9:00 pm. the other reason why i like this program is that there is no violence and it can enhances my general knowledge. i dislike watching news, because they always give you depression and tension. so i want to stick to an old English proverb “no news is good news”, so if i don’t watch them or listen to them i have no news about what’s happening in this mean and crazy world. i think that’s it
A museum: here I’d like to describe an interesting public building, Henan Museum. The museum is located in Nongye Road and is very popular with visitors. Actually I first knew this place from one of my mates who has ever been there before and told me it was free to lots of people including college students, which I thought was really fantastic. And I’ve been there on several occasions already. The interesting thing about the museum is its main building which looks just like one of the ancient Egypt pyramids except for the fact that it’s not made of stones. There are three floors in the building and most of the exhibits are on its ground floor. Things displayed there are really interesting and brilliant. There are ancient cultural relics such as swords, spears, tools, accessories and so on that are mainly discovered within Henan province. Many of the objects are the relics from Shang Dynasty which is famous for its bronze civilization and there is even a dress well preserved in the museum, which is really beautiful. I can’t imagine how people in ancient times made it. I think the museum was built for educational purposes because by looking at those historical items that represent the conditions in certain periods of history, people can get a clear view of what it was like in the past in a more direct and vivid way. And another aim for the building of the museum is to let people remember the brilliant history which gives people the pride and motivation to work hard for a more brilliant civilization in the future.
Ok then, I'm going to describe a newspaper that I like reading, and it's actually one of Zhengzhou's local papers called the Zhengzhou Daily. The reason I started reading this particular paper is basically because it came free when I bought my cell phone, so it would be a bit of a waste if I didn't read it! Anyway, as for what the newspaper is about, well, it actually covers quite a range of news, such as current affairs, business, sports, local and national news, you name it! But I'd say it essentially focuses on regional news, because after all, it is just a local paper, which, as far as I know, is only circulated in and around Zhengzhou. And with regard to how often I read it, well, I guess pretty much every day actually, although to be precise, I hardly ever read
