Jason Ahn’s favorite parts of Marvel’s Iron Man movies are scenes showing inventions being developed. Many of these scenes are similar to the experiences he went through himself before winning national recognition for an innovative classroom whiteboard design.
For Ahn, 17, a rising senior at Ames High School in Iowa in the US, there was a good month’s worth of nights staying up until 4 am—before going to school the next day—during which he first gained the idea for an auto rolling and erasing whiteboard, or ARE Board. He then submitted it to the Raytheon Technologies Invention Convention US Nationals.
All that work paid off for Ahn in 2022 when he was among inventors from across the country to win awards at the competition.
In his advanced placement physics class—and throughout most of his time in school—he noticed his teachers struggle with having to write and erase the same notes for each of their classes; that was if they could even reach the top of their traditional whiteboards. However, electronic whiteboards are too expensive.
He made a working prototype (原型) of a whiteboard on a motorized conveyor belt system that can be scrolled (滚动) up and down. It is more time and space efficient than a traditional whiteboard. He wanted to make something similar to an electronic whiteboard but far cheaper and easy to use.
“I’ve seen my friends kind of joking, ‘Isn’t this kind of a step backward? We’ve evolved all the way to electronic whiteboards’.” Ahn said.
“In some cases, it’s good to keep the traditional aspects and characteristics of some fundamental tools,” because markers and erasers are more tangible (有形的) and accessible to people, he added.
One of the awards he won at the competition provided him with a patent lawyer to help him get a patent application with the fee covered. He’d be willing to sell a patent to a company.
Ahn thinks of things in daily life that might make the world a better place. “I’m making a notebook of all the ideas that I’m thinking of,” he said.

Have you ever wondered why you might be a little shorter than your friends or family? Perhaps you’re at the other end, sick of people asking “What’s the weather like up there ?”. Well, scientists believe the mystery of why humans are growing taller and reaching puberty (青春期) earlier is due to a sensor in the brain.
A joint research, carried out by the University of Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London, the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University and the University of Bristol, showed that there is a brain receptor—MC3R—responsible for signals from food reaching a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which was already well known for being responsible for keeping things in check like body temperature and managing appetite and weight.
MC3R not working properly tends to mean that people are shorter and start puberty much later. Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly, one of the authors of the study, said :“ It tells the body we’re great here, we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly, have puberty soon and make lots of babies .” “ It’s not just magic—we have the complete wiring diagram for how it happens .”
There is an awful lot about the brain we still do not know. However, this research could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later. But then, more understanding of the receptor won’t mean that we can make ourselves taller. That all still depends on genes, but it could help people with chronic illnesses who need to build up muscle .
“Future research should investigate if drugs that selectively activate the MC3R might help redirect calories into muscle and other lean (瘦肉) tissues, with the prospect of improving the physical functionality of such patients ,” O’Rahilly said .

Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others, according to Wise Tour, an online provider of tourist information.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation. Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself depicts , more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living.
