Discussion: What makes a good composition?

A. The choice of words
1. It shows a common phenomenon nowadays that children are the focus of families, shouldering the hope of their parents. (福建试题)
句中的“shoulder”原为名词，而在此语境中则转化为动词，意为“肩负着”的意思。词汇的转换常常会将人们司空见惯的表达呈现出耳目一新的感觉，打破人们墨守成规的约束，使表达的内容富有新意。
2. Immediate actions should be taken, like stopping cutting down trees to better the environment. (江苏试题)
句中的“better”起到了非常重要的作用，许多学生则往往会考虑用动词“protect”来表达此义，但相比之下“better”一词作为动词更富有韵味，它蕴含了“保护”、“美化”、“有利于”等内涵意义，起到了点石成金的作用。
B. The use of phrases
1. Parents arrange everything for their children and spare no effort to pave the way for their success. (福建试题)
句中的“spare no effort”和“pave the way for”两个短语把父母为子女所做的一切刻画得十分深刻，可怜天下父母心就在这短语中突显出来。
2. It also helps me better understand the proverb “Practice makes perfect.” (浙江试题)
句中的谚语“Practice makes Perfect”用得恰如其分，点明了作者个人的深层感悟和体会。另外该谚语中的practice和perfect又形成了英语修辞头韵法的手法，给文章增添了美感。
C. The choice of sentence structures
1. 只有当所有的人都意识到节约时间的重要性我们才能取得最大进步。
a. We can make the most progress only when all of us realize the importance of saving time.
b. Only when all of us realize the importance of saving time can we make the most progress. （倒装）
2. 她热泪盈眶地离开了老师的办公室。
a. Tears filled her eyes and she left the teacher’s office.
b. With tears filling her eyes, she left the teacher’s office. (with的复合结构)
3. 你的心情好坏其实由你自己决定。
a. Do you have a good mood or a bad mood? It depends on yourself indeed.
b. Whether you have a good mood or a bad mood depends on yourself indeed. (主语从句)
D. Proper linking words
(一) 使用连接性副词
1. We have many things to do. We believe we can finish before the day is over.
→We have quite a lot to do. Hopefully, we will be able to finish before the day is over.
2. The boy comes from a poor family. The boy does very well in his studies. The boy plans to work his way through college.
→Even though he comes from a poor family, the boy does very well in his studies; furthermore, he plans to work his way through college.
(二) 使用从属连词
1. You work hard and never give up. You will succeed in your studies.
→ So long as you work hard, you will succeed in your studies.
2. The teacher came in. The students were quiet.
→ The students were quiet as soon as the teacher came in.
（三）使用关联词
1. 表示平行、对等或选择关系：and, both…and, as well as, neither…or, also, not only…but also等。
2. 表示转折关系：but, yet, however, nevertheless, in spite of, although, otherwise, while等。
3. 表示对比关系：On the contrary, instead of, on the other hand, just like, unlike等。
4. 表示因果关系：so, for, therefore, as a result, because, owing to, due to, thanks to, on account of等。
5 表示时间、顺序关系：shortly after, first…, second…, then, next, finally, for one thing; for another thing, in the end, eventually等。
6. 表示递进、强调关系：besides, furthermore, what’s more, in addition, moreover, worse still, above all, certainly important of all, to make matters worse等。
7. 表示解释、说明关系：namely, actually, such as, for example/ instance, that is to say, in other words, and so on, to tell you the truth, according to…. 等。
8. 表示结论：in short, in brief, in a word, in general, as you know ,as far as I know, on the whole等。
