When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings（缺点）. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

Many people are shouting on their cell phones on the way to or from work. It may make other people feel uncomfortable .But most Americans believe there are unspoken rules about etiquette(礼仪) of using electric devices(设备).
Checking emails ,sending text messages and making telephone calls while you are in the office with others are regarded as bad manners .Sending mobile phone messages during an appointment is also not allowed.
But most people said they would like to received an email saying “Thank you ”instead of a written note, and 75 percent people had no objections(反对) to someone using laptops , netbooks or cell phones in the bathroom. “Etiquette is first of all a question of awareness(意识)，”said Anna Post ,an author and etiquette expert.
But she described the result as “pretty surprising things.”
Sixty -two percent of the 2,625 adults who took part in the survey agreed that the cell phones ,laptops ,netbooks and other electronic devices were part of daily life.
Fifty - five percent also thought business meant people must stay connected,even if it included taking a laptop on a holiday or answering a cell phone during a meal.
Although the need to be often connected had been generally accepted ,people were still sensitive(敏感的) about using electronic devices during holidays and religious(宗教的) activities.
nearly 90 percent of Americans thought using cell phones was unaccepted during a religious service. 30 percent said they would be unhappy if they received an online gift. But more than half the people said that they would like to send an electronic greeting card instead of a traditional one.
