Used across the continents in many countries, English has established itself as an international language; the lingua-franca of the current world. During the Reform and Opening, if you would like to do business with foreigners, you must learn English. It is the language of international conferences and also spoken and written by many. In the current days, many important literatures are published in English. If you understand more English, you can then read English newspapers and articles, learn more international knowledge, and contribute towards world peace. English is important to us, but many students don't understand why they have to study it. I hope all students should see the importance of English and use it fluently.
2、   人人都需要、朋友。朋友可以给我们以帮助，与我们共事困难和快乐。但是，怎样交朋友呢?
    交朋友首先要对别人友善。你对别人微笑；肯定别人也会报以微笑。要使陌生人感到亲切，关心别人要比：关心自己为重，决不以貌取人。
    其次，朋友之间应该商量而不是争吵。当与别人有分歧时，要和他一起讨论。
    最后，不要相信那些在危急关头背离你的人，也不要在朋友危难时离开他。记住：患难之中见真情。

How to Make Friends

Everyone needs friends. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how can we make friends?

First, to make friends, you must be friendly to others. Smile at others and you are sure to get a smile in return. You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes.

Second, friends should negotiate instead of quarrel.
When you don’t agree someone, please discuss with him.

Finally, never believe in those who leave you when you are in trouble. And never leave your friend when he is in trouble. Remember, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Friends should be faithful to each other. So long as you can put your friend’s interests in front of yours, you will have a lot of good friends.

Nowadays Intemet is very popular all over the world,  especially in some big cities. Do you know when the Intemet was first established? Built in 1960s, the Internet was a crude network of a few computers which shared information. If one of the computers broke down, the whole networks would be unable to work, causing continual problems. At first, just the government had access to the Internet, using it for communications among different branches. However, by 1970s the Internet had been used in universities, banks, and hospitals. Internet was first established in 1960s. At that time, the computer was both large and expensive and the networks were unable to work well. If one of the computers broke down, the whole networks would be unable to work.
     At first, the Intemet was just used by the government. By 1970s, it had been used in universities, banks and hospitals. At the beginning of 1990s,computers became both cheaper and easier to operate. Now it is very convenient to log on the Intemet.
     It is said that each day tens of millions of people log on the Internet. Sending e-mails is becoming more and more popular.
     The Intemet has become the most important part of people's life.

4、   乘飞机旅行比坐火车旅行有两大优点。第一，可以节约时间。从北京到广州乘飞机只用两个小时，而坐火车需要二十四个小时甚至更多。第二，乘飞机更舒适。飞机飞得很平稳，我们可以休息得很好；而火车有时很拥挤，而且要坐好长时间，容易疲劳。但是坐火车旅行也有它的优点。例如，坐火车旅行只花250元而乘飞机则需900元。除此之外，透过火车的窗口，我们可以欣赏郑州、武汉和长沙等大城市的风光。
    所以我认为不同的人喜欢不同的旅行方式。
Train Travel Air Travel
Air travel has two advantages over train travel. First, it can save much time.We can fly from Beijing to Guangzhou jusi in two hours, but by train, we have to spend 24 hours or more. Second, air travel is more comfortable, because the plane flies so smoot qly that we can rest well during the trip, while the train is crowded sometimes and passengers have to sit for a long time, which makes them tired. But train travel also has its advantages. For example, traveling by train costs only 250 yuan while traveling by air will cost 900 yuan.Besides this, outside of the train＇s windows, we can enjoy the views of many big cities, such as Zhengzhou, Wuhan,ad Changsha.
So I think different people like different ways of traveling.
5、   我对赶时髦的看法
    现在越来越多的年轻人喜欢赶时髦，对于这一现象，不同的人有不同的看法。有人认为为了不被轻视或被认为古怪应该赶时髦，但是也有人认为应该有自己的判断。
    那些持第一种观点的人认为社会在进步应该使自己适应不断的变化。他们认为如果人人总是坚持旧的方式，就不会有变化，自然也就不会有进步。比较起来，持第二种观点的人认为不应该不加辨别地赶时髦，应该有自己的判断和特点。
    就我看采，我同意后者的意见。诚然，人应该灵活以适应形势，但是这并不是说应该不加辨别地赶时髦，因为它也许没有益处，我们应该考虑它是有利还是不利，而且，应该有自己的特点。如果人人都赶同样妁时髦，就不会有变化，整个社会就单调乏味。
My View on Following the Fashion
Nowadays more and more young people prefer to follow the fashion. On this phenomenon, different people have different views. It is held that one should follow the fashion so as not to be despised or considered eccentric. But it is also held that one should have one's own judgment.
Those who hold the first opinion think that society is progressing and one should adapt oneself to the constant change. In their opinion, if everyone always sticks to the old fashion, there won't be any change and naturally there won't be progress. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that one shouldn't follow the fashion without discrimination and one should have one's own judgment and characteristics.
As for me, I agree with the latter opinion. Admittedly one should be flexible and adapt himself to the situation, but this is not to say that one should follow the fashion without discrimination because the fashion may not be beneficial.We should consider whether the fashion is favorable or unfavorable. Moreover, one should have one's own characteristics. If everyone follows the same fashion, there will not be variety and the whole society will be monotonous.

6、    水对生物很重要，没有水，地球上就没有生命。所有的动植物都需要水。人类也需要水。
    水几乎无处不在。即使在世界上最干燥的地方，空气中也有水。 
    水，正如你所了解的，有固态、液态和气态。当它是固态时，它可以像砖一样硬；当它是液态时，你可以将它从容器中倒出；当它是气态时，你看不见或感觉不到它。
    虽然地球表面70％是水覆盖着，世界上仍有许多地方缺水。所以我们要好好利用地球上的水。
Water
Water is very important for living things. Without water there can be no life on earth. All animals and plants need water. Man also needs water.
Water is found atmosteverywhere. Even in the driest part of the world there is some water in the air.
As we all have found out, water may be a solid, or a liquid or a gas.When it isa solid, it may be as hard as brick, When itis a liquid, you can pour it out of a container. When it is a gas, you cannot see or feel it.
Although about 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water,there are many places in the world still running out of water. So we should make good use of water on earth.

7、   2002年7月15日晚，我乘火车去长沙度假。由于天气很热，车厢里有很多乘客都想喝水。正好，一个年轻人提着水壶来送水。“水，水，免费供水。”年轻人大声嚷着。
    一位中年妇女喝了一杯水，非常感激他。可过了一会儿，来了两个又高又壮的人向她要5元水钱。中年妇女看着他们，慢慢地从兜里掏出了5元纸币给其中一个人。她什么也没说，眼里充满了愤怒。
    车厢里一片寂静。那两个人毫无愧色地走了。“强盗!”有人小声说道。
    这是我经历过的一次不愉快的旅行。
I went to Changsha for my holiday by train on the night of July 15th,2002. It was so hot in the carriage that many passengers wanted something to drink. Just then, a young man came to deliver water with a water jug in hand. "Water, water. Free water. "shouted the young man.
     A middle-aged woman asked for a glass of water and was very grateful to the young man. But after a while, two tall and strong men came to charge her five yuan for that glass of water. The middle-aged woman looked at them and took out a five-yuan note from one of her pockets slowly. Without a word, she handed the note to one of them, her eyes being filled with anger.
     The carriage was silent. The two men went away without any sense of shame. "Robbers!" someone said in a low voice.
     This was really an unpleasant trip I have ever had!

On the night of July 15th,2002,I went to Changsha for my holiday on a train. It was very hot. The temperature went up to 38 centigrade. It was stuffy and crowded in the carriage, so many passengers wanted something to drink, Just then,  a young man came to deliver water with a water jug in hand. "Water, water. Free water. "The young man shouted while walking.
      A middle-aged woman asked for a glass of water and was very thankful to the young man. But after a while, two tall and strong men came to charge her 5 yuan for that glass of water. The woman looked at them for a while,then she took out a 5-yuan note from one of her pockets and handed it to one of them. Though she said nothing, her eyes were full of anger. The two men went away without any sense of shame.
      This was the most unpleasant trip I have ever had.
8、    大家都知道，获得成功的唯一途径就是辛勤付出。正如那句老话所言：不推磨，没面吃。你见过一令人靠无所事事获得成功吗?答案当然是否定的。因此，我们应明白有劳才有获这个道理。
    一年的辛苦劳作使农民获得丰收；科学家经过多年钻研后取得成就；学生努力学习才取得；好成绩；就连小小的，蚂蚁也是靠日以继夜的劳动才获得了食物。但依旧有许多人渴望着天上掉馅饼，他们失败时，会归罪。于运气不好，所以最终他们什么也不会得到。聪明人知道，越努力去做，成功机率越大。
    当你看见别人成功而自己仍无所事事时，不用抱怨命运不公，更别轻易放弃。记住，有付出才会有收获
It is obvious to everybody that the only way to achieve one's goal is to work hard. Just as the old saying goes "no mill, no meal". Have you ever seen a man who succeeds just by idling about? Of course, the answer is "No". So we know if you want to gain something, you will have pains.

The farmers harvest by a year of arduous work; the scientists gain achievements by years of devoted researches; students get good marks by working hard; even the little ants have their food by working hard day and night. 1 know there are always some people who wait for the opportunities falling on them. They may attribute their failures to lack of good chances. Therefore, there are so many people gaining nothing at last. Clever men know that the more effort they make, the bigger chance they will have to be successful.

So, when others achieve their aspirations and you still gain nothing, don't complain about the unfair fate and don't give up, either. Remember: no pains, no gains.
