、job advertisement. B A few years ago, at a medical laboratory clinic in Waterloo, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair singing the tune “My Heart Will Go On”. With little effort, she sent her sweet voice exploding into every comer of the clinic. I was there with my father whe

、n the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my father. Because she was so tiny, she had to sit on the edge of the chair so her feet could touch the floor. It seemed as though she was sitting forward to start a conversation with him. I was concerned about how my father would r

、eact to the possible invasion of his space. He was 77 and had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. Since Alzheimers has a tendency to destroy a person’s patience, Dad had had a few challenging experiences in the past. I couldn’t help but think that this woman was playing with fire

、 Her singing began gently. My father was staring right at her. I couldn’t read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. I wondered whether he was actually looking at her or if he was lost somewhere deep in his mind. Or maybe he was trying to discover whether this was someone

、he should know. That was what was happening now: no polite smile, no friendly nod. Just a stare. This lack of important acknowledgment didn’t deter the little woman one bit and her singing slowly got louder. Getting to the chorus, she was totally lost in her own singing with her eyes shut. Still,

、I watched for any signs of an outburst of anger. But he didn’t show any signs of an explosion. Instead, his face softened and he was starting to look entertained. When her song ended, the woman opened her eyes. My dad was still looking directly at her. ‘‘That was beautiful,” he said. And she smiled

、 C.A tune draws people closer D.Classics will always live on C Clothes were once used until they fell apart-repaired and sewed to be re-used, ending their lives as dishcloths. Not today. Clothing, footwear and upholstered furniture are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and

、 replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon abandoned and replaced. ‘Fast fashion’ is so called partly because the fashion industry now releases new lines every week, when historically this happened four times a year. Today, fashion brands(品牌)produce almost twice the amount of clothing t

、hat they did in 2000. But incredibly, more than 50 billion clothes are deserted within a year of being made. The trend is having an astonishing environmental impact. Take water. The fashion industry, one of the world’s largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litre

、s every year. Besides, plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester(聚酯纤维)and other polymer-based textiles(纺织物), and make up between 20% and 35% of the microplastics choking the oceans. Added to this are specific chemicals used to make fabrics dirt resistant and the pesticides required to prote

、ct crops such as cotton. Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the tech

、nologies for sustainable manufacturing(制造)processes, especially recycling. There is work to be done for researchers on improving and expanding textiles recycling. Most used textiles go to landfill(废物填埋场), in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials. Suc

、h recycling requires the manual separation of fibres, as well as buttons and zips. Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye, and overall such manual processes are time-consuming. Machinery is being developed that can help. Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to crea

、te high-quality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale(规模)needed. Another challenge for researchers is to work out how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behaviour. Small steps are good, but big changes are needed. The shameful environmental cost

、 of a new cupboard needs to be tackled immediately, at scale, with style. 28.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? A.Clothes should be used until they fall apart. B.Fashion brands are replaced with new ones frequently. C.Fast fashion leads to a significant increase in fashion waste. D

、.Fashion brands produce twice more clothing than necessary. 29.According to the author, what does the circular economy focus on? A.Improving the production of natural textiles. B.Studying how fast fashion affects the environment. C.Releasing new lines four times a year instead of every week. D.

、Making durable things and expanding the technologies for recycling. 30.What can you infer from the passage? A.Consumers are fond of chemically recycled fibres. B.Systems that collect, recycle and reuse are insufficient. C.Manual separation of fibres is preferred by manufacturers. D.Environment

、damage is mainly caused by using chemicals. 31.What does the author think of the future of fashion industry? A.Big changes are needed to follow fashion styles. B.Huge steps should be taken for the needs of consumers. C.More should be done to deal with the heavy environmental cost. D.Consumers a

、nd manufacturers will change their behaviour immediately. D Researchers have successfully changed the blood type of a donated human lung by treating it with enzymes(酶) marking an important step towards making universal donor organs. Blood types are largely defined by the presence or absence of ce

、rtain sugar molecules (分子) called antigens(抗原) on the surface of cells. These can occur not just on the cells of the blood itself, but other tissues. If an antigen isn’t recognized by the body’s immune system, it will mount an attack on these cells. This leads to the rejection of transplanted organs

、 from a donor with a different blood type. People with the most common blood type, O, lack these antigens on their cells, so their organs can be accepted by people with other blood types. If all donor organs could be made type O, for example, the lungs from someone with blood type A, this could be

、beneficial. To try this, Cypel and his team used a pair of enzymes in the human stomach to digest sugars. They found the enzymes could remove 97 percent of type A antigens in the lungs from a type A donor in 4 hours, which meant the cells had been effectively changed to blood type O. After this tr

、eatment, the altered lungs were kept alive using a system known as ex-vivo lung perfusion (离体肺灌注), which supplies organs with nutritious fluid so they are ready for transplantation. To simulate a transplant, Cypel’s team added type O blood, which contains antibodies that would attack type A antigens

、 to the fluid supplying the lungs. The treated lungs had minimal antibody damage compared with untreated lungs. Although cells rid of antigens tend to produce new ones over time, Cypel hopes the lack of antigens would last long enough for the body to get through the dangerous first few days and we

、eks after a transplant. The team now intends to test the procedure in animals. The study only looked at the effects of a simulated transplantation over the short term, which isn’t enough to assess whether the resurfaced antigens could eventually have a negative effect. 32.Which of the following may

、 decide the blood type of a person? A.Sugar. B.Enzymes. C.Antibody. D.Antigens. 33.Why should the blood type of the donor organs be changed into type O? A.Type O is better than other blood types. B.Type O is more accessible to researchers. C.Organs with type O can be more acceptable. D.Or

、gans with type O can help digest antigens. 34.What do we know about the treated lungs from the text? A.The blood type was temporarily changed. B.Signs of severe rejection happened to them. C.There was no effective way to keep them alive. D.The enzymes were of little use in the treatment.

、 35.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.Practical suggestions for future study. B.Detailed explanations of the findings. C.Potential applications of the discovery. D.Major limitations of the present study. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The brain is a
