That year, my father worked abroad — and couldn’t come back for Christmas. My mother, sister and I had to make our own Christmas decorations.
My mother and I dragged in the final section of our seven-foot artificial Christmas tree from the garage. Before setting the tree in its stand, we moved our sofa over so we would have the room needed for our large tree to fit in the living room. In a moment, we would form the branches that would hold our decorations.
Everything was going smoothly, and my sister announced the stand was ready. Mother and I lifted the bottom section of the tree and were about to place it into the stand when I heard a scream. It was so loud that I assumed someone had broken into our home.
“A mouse! A mouse!” screamed my sister. She screamed just as loud, and jumped up on the sofa as the baby mouse ran to one side of our living room and then the other. Because of the loud screams, the mouse was frightened. The little creature had obviously found a home in our Christmas tree. Once we brought the tree inside and opened the branches, the baby mouse fell out of its temporary home and ran across our living room.
“Get the mouse!” my sister screamed.
It was so tiny and quick that I wasn’t sure what to do. I tried grabbing its long gray tail, but it slipped away. Then I ran to our bedroom and came back with an empty shoebox and a fly swatter (蝇拍). My plan was to stun (打晕) the little mouse and put it in the box.
I was about to hit it with the swatter when my sister shouted out, “Don’t kill it! It’s a baby and kind of cute.” My mother agreed with her, and I could tell by its frightened eyes that the little mouse did, too.

Indeed, award plaques (牌匾) lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two young, inexperienced kids who could sing only a simple melody.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks. Quite on the contrary, more determined, they begged and insisted every day. To protect their pride, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough. But I wasn’t a miracle worker. And so I hesitated about this dilemma.
Finally one morning I stepped into class. “Look at the clock!” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full minutes because some of you don’t have your music ready. If we are entering the contest” The rest of my sentence was lost in cheers of delight and applause.
“From now on,” I continued when the noise weakened, “you will find the day’s lesson plan on the board. Make full preparations for each class and follow my instructions absolutely. You will work much harder than you’ve ever worked in any class before. And if one of these rules is broken, we will not go to the contest.”
I was certain they would fail to keep this contract, and no one would be embarrassed. But the kids remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each morning witnessed their diligence: working on sight-reading, learning musical terms, rehearsing, etc. Their progress was so remarkable that even I began believing in their dream.
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready and confident to take on the world! Their eyes, however, opened wide when the Madison choir marched in seventy-five members strong. My kids’ jaws dropped when 125 students from King School arrived. Two private schools came with fifty members each, and finally forty-five members from Milwaukee School of Art.

When Mark was five years old, his parents separated and he stayed with his mother.

After he graduated from college, Mark got married and one year later, had a boy. The years passed.
One day when Mark’s son was five years old and as Mark was preparing to shave his face, his son looked up at him and laughed, “Daddy, you look like a clown (小丑) with that cream on your face.”
Mark laughed, looked into the mirror and realized how much his son looked like him at that age. Later, he remembered that his mother said he had told his own father the same thing.
This event started him thinking about his own father a lot and he began asking his mother. It had been a long time since Mark had spoken of his father and his mother told him that it was now over twenty years since she had spoken to him. In addition, all her knowledge of his father stopped when Mark became eighteen.
Mark looked deep into his mother’s eyes and said, “I need to find my father.” His mother then told him that his dad’s relatives had all passed away, and she had no idea where to begin searching for him but added, “Maybe, just maybe, if you contact the United States Embassy in England, they might be able to help you.”
Even though the chances seemed slim, Mark was determined. The very next day, he made an overseas call to the American Embassy.
“U.S. Embassy, how may we help you?”
“Ahh...hi, my name is Mark Sullivan and I am hoping to find my father.”
There was a long pause and the ruffing of some papers,’ and then the man said:
“Is this Mr. Mark Joseph Sullivan?”
“Yes,” Mark answered anxiously.
They checked the birth place and date.

“Can you believe it?” he said as they changed into their boots. “Sixteen inches! Are you ready?”
For the next hour, the pair skied on various runs under a lightly gloomy sky, making fresh tracks. They were both in a playful mood. Finally, they reached 16-to-1, an expert-level trail, which was now open. It had been closed all season over concerns that skiers might cause an avalanche (雪崩). But that morning, patrollers had cleared loose snow on the peak, reducing the chance of a snowslide.
“What do you think?” asked Warren.
“Let’s go for it!” Scott replied
When they reached the top of 16-to-1, Warren excitedly looked back at Scott. The huge, toothy grin on his bearded face was what he needed. He pointed his skis downhill and took off. So thrilled were they that they isolated everything around them. Flying on the trail, despite the biting wind, their hearts burnt with passion for this great skiing. Whoomph! A sudden roar from behind nearly deafened them.

But this year there was a big surprise. Each child received one of the normal jobs, like preparing the books or the radio for the lessons, telling the time, cleaning the blackboard, and looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and some ants. And even though the teacher insisted that they were very special ants, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. Anyway, she accepted the task. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They sympathised with her and remarked on how unfair it was that she had been given that job. Even Rita’s father felt sorry for her, and as an act of protest, he told Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However, Rita, who liked her teacher very much, preferred to show the teacher her ability by doing something special with such an insignificant task. “I will turn this ‘little task’ into something great,” Rita said to herself.
