2、greatbeaconlightofhopetomillionsofnegroslaveswhohadbeensearedintheflamesofwitheringinjustice.itcameasajoyousdaybreaktoendthelongnightoftheircaptivity. butonehundredyearslater,thenegrostillisnotfree.onehundredyearslater,thelifeofthenegroisstillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationandthechains
3、ofdiscrimination.onehundredyearslater,thenegrolivesonalonelyislandofpovertyinthemidstofavastoceanofmaterialprosperity.onehundredyearslater,thenegroisstilllanguishedinthecornersofamericansocietyandfindshimselfanexileinhisownland.andsowe'vecomeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition. inasensewe'v
4、ecometoournation'scapitaltocashacheck.whenthearchitectsofourrepublicwrotethemagnificentwordsoftheconstitutionandthedeclarationofindependence,theyweresigningapromissorynotetowhicheveryamericanwastofallheir.thisnotewasapromisethatallmen,yes,blackmenaswellaswhitemen,wouldbeguaranteedthe"unalienablerigh
5、ts"of"life,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness."itisobvioustodaythatamericahasdefaultedonthispromissorynote,insofarashercitizensofcolorareconcerned.insteadofhonoringthissacredobligation,americahasgiventhenegropeopleabadcheck,acheckwhichhascomebackmarked"insufficientfunds." butwerefusetobelievethat
6、thebankofjusticeisbankrupt.werefusetobelievethatthereareinsufficientfundsinthegreatvaultsofopportunityofthisnation.andso,we'vecometocashthischeck,acheckthatwillgiveusupondemandtherichesoffreedomandthesecurityofjustice. wehavealsocometothishallowedspottoremindamericaofthefierceurgencyofnow.this
7、isnotimetoengageintheluxuryofcoolingoffortotakethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism.nowisthetimetomakerealthepromisesofdemocracy.nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevalleyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice.nowisthetimetoliftournationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherh
8、ood.nowisthetimetomakejusticearealityforallofgod'schildren. itwouldbefatalforthenationtooverlooktheurgencyofthemoment.thisswelteringsummerofthenegro'slegitimatediscontentwillnotpassuntilthereisaninvigoratingautumnoffreedomandequality.nineteensixty-threeisnotanend,butabeginning.andthosewhohopet
9、hatthenegroneededtoblowoffsteamandwillnowbecontentwillhavearudeawakeningifthenationreturnstobusinessasusual.andtherewillbeneitherrestnortranquilityinamericauntilthenegroisgrantedhiscitizenshiprights.thewhirlwindsofrevoltwillcontinuetoshakethefoundationsofournationuntilthebrightdayofjusticeemerges.
10、 butthereissomethingthatimustsaytomypeople,whostandonthewarmthresholdwhichleadsintothepalaceofjustice:intheprocessofgainingourrightfulplace,wemustnotbeguiltyofwrongfuldeeds.letusnotseektosatisfyourthirstforfreedombydrinkingfromthecupofbitternessandhatred.wemustforeverconductourstruggleonthehighp
11、laneofdignityanddiscipline.wemustnotallowourcreativeprotesttodegenerateintophysicalviolence.againandagain,wemustrisetothemajesticheightsofmeetingphysicalforcewithsoulforce. themarvelousnewmilitancywhichhasengulfedthenegrocommunitymustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofourwhitebrothe
12、rs,asevidencedbytheirpresenceheretoday,havecometorealizethattheirdestinyistiedupwithourdestiny.andtheyhavecometorealizethattheirfreedomisinextricablyboundtoourfreedom. wecannotwalkalone. andaswewalk,wemustmakethepledgethatweshallalwaysmarchahead. wecannotturnback. therearetho

16、labama,gobacktosouthcarolina,gobacktogeorgia,gobacktolouisiana,gobacktotheslumsandghettosofournortherncities,knowingthatsomehowthissituationcanandwillbechanged. letusnotwallowinthevalleyofdespair,isaytoyoutoday,myfriends. andsoeventhoughwefacethedifficultiesoftodayandtomorrow,istillhavea
