Look at the four squares that

2、indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.Where would the sentence best fit?

Their competition and collaboration were creating the broadcasting industry in the United States, beginning with the introduction of commercial radio programming in the e

4、arly 1920s. With financial assets considerably greater than those in the motion picture industry, and perhaps a wider vision of the relationships among entertainment and communications media, they revitalized research into recording sound for motion pictures. In 1929 the United States motion picture

5、 industry released more than 300 sound filmsa rough figure, since a number were silent films with music tracks, or films prepared in dual versions, to take account of the many cinemas not yet wired for sound. At the production level, in the United States the conversion was virtually complete by 1930

6、. In Europe it took a little longer, mainly because there were more small producers for whom the costs of sound were prohibitiveLook at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. When this research resulted in the development of vastly improved sound te

7、chniques, film studios became convinced of the importance of converting to sound. So, in another set of experiments, Kramer put identical food boxes around the cage, with food in only one of the boxes. The boxes were stationary, and the one contain

8、ing food was always at the same point of the compass. However, its position with respect to the surroundings could be changed by revolving either the inner cage containing the birds or the outer walls, which served as the background. As long as the birds could see the Sun, no matter how their surrou

9、ndings were altered, they went directly to the correct food box. Whether the box appearedLook at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. He arranged the feed boxes at various positions on a compass.

Since 1980, the use of wind to produce electricity has been growing rapidly. In 1994 there were nearly 20,000 wind turbines worldwide, most grouped in clusters called win

11、d farms that collectively produced 3,000 megawatts of electricity. Most were in Denmark (which got 3 percent of its electricity from wind turbines) and California (where 17,000 machines produced 1 percent of the states electricity, enough to meet the residential needs of a city as large as San Franc

12、isco). In principle, all the power needs of the United States could be provided by exploiting the wind potential of just three statesNorth Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas. Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. Some companies in the power in

13、dustry are aware of this wider possibility and are planning sizable wind-farm projects in states other than California. Under very cold conditions, rocks can be shattered by ice and frost. Glaciers may form in per

14、manently cold areas, and these slowly moving masses of ice cut out valleys, carrying with them huge quantities of eroded rock debris. In dry areas the wind is the principal agent of erosion. It carries fine particles of sand, which bombard exposed rock surfaces, thereby wearing them into yet more sa

15、nd. Even living things contribute to the formation of landscapes. Tree roots force their way into cracks in rocks and, in so doing, speed their splitting. In contrast, the roots of grasses and other small plants may help to hold loose soil fragments together, thereby helping to prevent erosion by th

16、e wind.Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.Under different climatic conditions, another type of destructive force contributes to erosion.another是不定代词,指代后一句提到的另外一个destructive force。

阅读中常出现的代词:this, this+n, these, another, such and other etc.3. Watts steam engine soon showed what it could do. It liberated industry from dependence on running water. The engine

18、 eliminated water in the mines by driving efficient pumps, which made possible deeper and deeper mining. The ready availability of coal inspired William Murdoch during the 1790s to develop the first new form of nighttime illumination to be discovered in a millennium and a half.Look at the four squar

19、es that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passageThe factories did not have to go to the streams when power could come to the factories这个句子里面的factories与前一句里的industry同义替代,这里同义替代并不是指两个词要完全对等才能同义替代。 Not only could

20、Smith identify rock strata by the fossils they contained, he could also see a pattern emerging: Certain fossils always appear in more ancient sediments, while others begin to be seen as the strata become more recent. By following the fossilsSmith was able to put all the strata of Englands earth into

21、 relative temporal sequence. About the same time, Georges Cuvier made the same discovery while studying the rocks around Paris. Soon it was realized that this principle of faunal (animal) succession was valid not only in England or France but virtually everywhere. It was actually a principle of flor

22、al succession as well, because plants showed the same transformation through time as did fauna.Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. The findings of these geologists inspired others to examine the rock and fossil records in different parts

23、of the world. Modern architectural forms generally have three separate components comparable to elements of

24、the human body; a supporting skeleton or frame, an outer skin enclosing the interior spaces, equipment, similar to the bodys vital organs and systems. The equipment includes plumbing, electrical wiring, hot water, and air-conditioning. Of course in early architecturesuch as igloos and adobe structur

25、esthere was no such equipment, and the skeleton and skin were often one. Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. However, some modern architectural designs, such as those using folded plates of concreter or air-inflated structures, are again

26、unifying skeleton and skin. 句子插入题常常出现的转折关系词有:however, but, yet, whereas and while etc.Because they are always swimming, tunas simply have to open their mouths and water is forced in and over their

27、gills. Accordingly, they have lost most of the muscles that other fishes use to suck in water and push it past the gills. In fact, tunas must swim to breathe. They must also keep swimming to keep from sinking, since most have largely or completely lost the swim bladder, the gas-filled sac that helps

28、 most other fish remain buoyant.Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence can be added to the passage.Consequently, tunas do not need to suck in water.

表示成果的逻辑关系词有:consequently, therefore, so, hence and thus etc.It has long been accepted that the Americas were colonized by a migration of peoples from Asia, slowly traveling across a land bridge called Beringia (now the Bering Strait between northeastern

30、 Asia and Alaska) during the last Ice Age. The first water craft theory about the migration was that around 11,000-12,000 years ago there was an ice-free corridor stretching from eastern Beringia to the areas of North America south of the great northern glaciers. It was the mid continental corridor

31、between two massive ice sheets-the Laurentide to the west-that enabled the southward migration. But belief in this ice-free corridor began to crumble when paleoecologist Glen MacDonald demonstrated that some of the most important radiocarbon dates used to support the existence of an ice-free corrido

32、r were incorrect. He persuasively argued that such an ice-free corridor did not exist until much later, when the continental ice began its final retreat. Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. Moreover, other evidence suggests that even if a

33、n ice-free corridor did exist, it would have lacked the resources needed for human colonization. The differences in feeding prefer

34、ences lead, in turn, to differences in migratory habits. The wildebeests follow, in their migration, the pattern of local rainfall. The other species do likewise. But when a new area is fueled by rain, the mammals migrate toward it in a set order to exploit it. The larger, less fastidious feeders, t

35、he zebras, move in first; the choosier, smaller wildebeests come later; and the smallest species of all, Thomsons gazelle, arrives last.Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. The sequence in which they migrate correlates with their body size

最后一句话the larger, less fastidious feeders, the zebras, move in first. Chinese porcelain wares imported into the Arab world. So admired were these pieces that they encouraged the development of earthenware made in

37、 imitation of porcelain and instigated research into the method of their manufacture. From the Middle East the Chinese acquired a blue pigmenta purified form of cobalt oxide unobtainable at that time in Chinathat contained only a low level of manganese. Cobalt ores found in China have a high mangane

38、se content, which produces a more muted blue-gray color. In the seventeenth century, the trading activities of the Dutch East India Company resulted in vast quantities of decorated Chinese porcelain being brought to Europe, which stimulated and influenced the work of a wide variety of wares, notably

39、 Delft. The Chinese themselves adapted many specific vessel forms from the West, such as bottles with long.Look at the four squares that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.Foreign trade was also responsible for certain innovations in coloring.
