Reading (I)
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. know about Neil Armstrong and his space travel;
2. understand the new words and phrases.

II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: pilot, licence, navy, serve, test, aircraft, astronaut, spacecraft, spin, control, pacific, ocean, land, step, giant, leap, mankind, surface, further, citizen, pride, order, out of control, cut … short
2. New structures: Armstrong received the order to cut the fight short.
He was the pride of the world
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
1. Guess the meaning of new words from context.
2. Improve students’ reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Pre-reading
Lead-in
T: Today I’ll show you some great people in aerospace history.
(1) What about this man? What is he?
(2) Do you know who this astronaut is? Can you say something about him/her?
(Yang Liwei, Liu Yang, Wang Yaping, Neil Armstrong)

Step 2 While-reading
1. Guess the meanings of new words
T: This article is a about Neil Armstrong. Go through it quickly and find out the meanings of the following words.
2. Work out a timeline for Neil Armstrong
T: Read the article again and work out a timeline for Neil Armstrong. It’s not necessary for you to read each paragraph carefully. You can read the first sentence of each paragraph to get the main idea.

T: How is the article organized? Obviously, it is organized in time order.

3. Neil Armstrong’s first trip into space
T: In 1966, Neil Armstrong and David Scott went into space by spacecraft Gemini 8. Read paragraph 3, and answer the following questions.
(1) What did they do during their trip into space?
(2) What unexpected thing happened on their way back?
(3) How did they deal with the problem?
(4) To solve the problem successfully, what qualities do you think Neil Armstrong should have?
4. Neil Armstrong’s trip to the Moon
T: Seven years after the trip into space，Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the spacecraft Apollo11 on the Moon. Watch the video of the trip and find out sentences in paragraphs 4 and 5 to describe what you have seen.

5. After the trip to the Moon
T: Read paragraph 7 and find out what award Armstrong got after his trip to the moon.

Step 3 Post- reading
1. Make an interview
T: Armstrong was considered as a hero. Many reporters wanted to interview him. Please work in pairs and make an interview according to this passage. One acts as a reporter and the other as Armstrong. Questions of Part B4 on page 25 may help you.
