By the way what is the panda saying?
He says that “You come to China. But you can’t find me. What a pity?”
He is right to say that. Pandas are in danger. To know more about the panda let’s go to page 74.
■Reading and vocabulary
1 Say what you know about pandas.
Giant Panda
The Giant Panda is a mammal. It is one of the bear family animals. The Giant Panda lives only in central and southern China.
The Giant Panda has large, clear black patches on the eyes, ears and on its body. The Giant Panda is one of the most endangered animals in the world. It is said that 1,600 pandas live in the wild and some 160 of them live in the reserve.
2 Read the passage and match the headings with the paragraphs.

Now listen to the its recording first, paying attention to the pronunciation, stress, and the intonation of the native speakers.

1 South China Tiger is one of the animals most in danger．There are about 59 South China Tigers living in zoos and research centres today. Scientists are studying how they live and more South China Tigers babies are born in the zoos and research centres.
2 South China Tigers live in the South China forests and mountains. They mainly live on smaller animals. The area of their home is becoming smaller for many different reasons, so they have less and less land to live on. South China Tigers don’t have many babies, and their babies often die. The situation is becoming very serious.

You have read the passage about pandas. Now in pairs try to answer the four questions on page 75.
1 Why do pandas have less and less land to live on?
Pandas mainly live on bamboo, and each panda needs to eat a lot of bamboo every day. The area of bamboo is becoming smaller for many different reasons, so pandas have less and less land to live on.
2 What do pandas need to eat?

Now choose another animal in danger such as a bear, camel, elephant, lion, tiger, turtle, snake or whale.
Answer these questions and write a paragraph about it.

A bear is a large mammal. It has a short tail, excellent senses of smell and hearing, five claws, and long, dense, shaggy fur.
Bears have a large body with powerful limbs. They can stand up on their hind legs. They have broad paws, long snouts, and round ears. Their teeth are used for defense. Their claws are used for ripping, digging, and catching.
Bears live in a many different places from forests to snowfields. They eat roots, nuts, and berries. They can also go to a river or other body of water to catch fish. Bears will travel far for food. Hunting times are usually in the dusk or the dawn. Some of the large bears are dangerous to humans. For the most part, bears are shy and are easily frightened of humans.
Bears are in danger because of human activities. The cities and villages are getting bigger and bigger. They have less and less food to eat.
We must do something to save bears. But what can we do? Let’s think about that.
A camel is a large even-toed animal. It lives in the dry and desert areas of Asia and northern Africa.
Camels are well known for their humps. They do not keep water in them as is believed. They keep water in their blood. So they can live days on end without food and water.
There are almost 13 million camels alive today. But camels are still in danger. For people are killing them for meat and other things.
We have to work hard to save camels.
