A Study on Suicide for Love among the Naxi Nationality

[Abstract]: This article aims at explaining the phenomena of “committing suicide for love” among the Naxi Nationality. In the area of Lijinag Naxi, committing suicide for love was prevalent once as a special custom. A variety of cultural forces influenced committing suicide for love.

The Naxi Nationality is famous in the world, not only because of its mysterious Dongba Culture, but also because of its mysterious “committing of suicide for love”. “Suicide for love”, is an important content in The Dongba Classics, and also the local history culture of one of the world cultural heritage Lijiang. Because of the existence of this mysterious fashion of suicide for love, the main settlement of the Naxi Lijiang, as the most serious area of the tragedy for people who suicide for love, is called “the capital of suicide for love” by Chinese and foreigners, such as Peter Gu wrote in his book, “Likiang could really hold the doubtful honour of being the world’s suicide capital. There was not a family that did not number a suicide or two among its members.” ( 顾彼得（俄）《被遗忘的王国》 2007:183 ) In Lijiang Naxi society, “suicide for love”, that is considered as “the core of suicide for love is feeling; the reason of suicide for love is love; the way of suicide for love is death”. ( 和永《纳西文化知识读本》 2006:144）
Suicide for love is called "you wu" in Naxi language; the people who are suicide for love are called “you wu xi”; and the tone of suicide for love is called “you bei” according to the folk of widespread. Generally, the reason that the people who are suicide for love is just that they cannot be in pairs or their parents against and don’t allow them to get married. They then choose the way that suicide for love to express their love for each other. Generally, hanged oneself in, as the way to suicide for love is the most commonly and first way. The second way is jumping and diving. The third way is eating opium or poison. After the people who have decided to die, they would discuss the date and prepare the things, especially the most beautiful closes, for death. They think that only wear beautiful closes, the god of love will be pleased to welcome them.
The number of Naxi people who suicide for love is so many just because they advocate freedom love. In AD1723, the ruling class throttled Naxi people who advocate freedom of love through "Confucianism". For the Naxi Lijiang people, at that time, the words “feeling” are not despised not mention to be profaned and offend. When Naxi young men and women in the embrace of the love are not recognized, understudied and supported, even by malicious rejection, they think they should find a place to return to and this place should be the most ideal place in the description of Dongba “lu ban lu rao”. It is on doubt that “Jade dragon snow mountain” is the most beautiful heaven. That's a place where can let their pure love eternal so that the pain will disappear forever. So, Naxi youth yearning for freedom love and marriage struggled with their unfair fate through suicide for love and wanted to be with each other forever after death.
The custom of Naxi people suicide for love is affected by their Dongba Religion. There are a lot of wooden plates, scripture sheets, cards and scrolls in Dongba Religion. The dance by Dongba on religious ceremony is for the purpose of pleading gods and warding off misfortunes and disasters so that the people who suicide for love could be with each other. The ceremony that hold for the people who suicide for love is called “ha la li ken” in Naxi language. To a certain extent，this important ceremony encourages Naxi youth to suicide for love.
Naxi youth who suicide for love is linked to their view of life back to nature. Dongba Religion worships “the eternal existence of the soul”, “causality”, and “transmigration”. The traditional cultures of Naxi worship nature and think that after death they will eventually return to nature. This thinking gives a lot of mysterious to nature so that Naxi people think nature is the source of magic power. This thinking is also attracted Naxi youth suicide for love. They can go to die and return the beautiful nature happily and blissfully.
“Suicide for love”, as the tragedy of the Naxi ethnic culture, with its mysterious and rich connotation reveals the nationality of the Naxi culture. “Suicide for love”, also can be understood as to the death of another kind of explanation by Naxi people. They want belief in the soul to help them hold out the possibility at least that there might be life after death then they think that a person is a soul plus a body. Although suicide for love has become a history, it is indeed a reflection of the personalized features of Naxi culture. At the same time, “committing of suicide for love” really highlighted the diversity of Naxi culture.
