The story of Princess Atlanta
In ancient Greece only men were allowed to take part in the Olympics. But it did not mean they were the fastest.Princess (公主) Atlanta could run faster than any man in Greece. Any man who could run faster than her was allowed to marry her, but those who lost the race would be killed.
Atlanta was so beautiful. Many young men in Greece risked their lives to challenge her, but no one succeeded. A young man named Hippomenes fell in love with Atlanta at first sight, so he raced with her.
Hippomenes prayed to the goddess of love for help and in return, received three apples. He ran as fast as he could at the start, but Atlanta passed him easily. He threw an apple in front of Atlanta. She was attracted by its beauty and stopped to pick it up. Hippomenes dashed (冲) ahead! The crowd cheered (欢呼) him on as he took the lead. But Atlanta was catching up.
He threw the second apple. Atlanta stopped a second time, and he pulled ahead. But Atlanta had caught up again!
When close to the finish line, he threw the third and last apple. It rolled (滚) to the side of the road and stopped. Atlanta thought for a moment, "Is that apple really worth the risk? But I have beaten many men before, I can do it again," she thought and picked up the last apple.
The few seconds it took Atlanta to pick up the last apple were all Hippomenes needed to finish the race. He had won!
Atlanta and Hippomenes soon married. However, caught up in the excitement and romance, they forgot to thank the goddess for her help. This really made her angry. As a punishment (惩罚), she turned them both into lions to pull herchariot (战车).

Peleus was a brave king of Greece; he was married to Thetis who was a sea-nymph. Except Eris, all gods were invited to their wedding. Eris was so angry that she threw a golden apple among the guests; “For the Fairest” was signed on the surface of the apple. Then Hear, Athena and Venus all denounced, “It is for Me!” Zeus felt it was a knotty problem; he was not willing to judge. So the three goddesses were dispatched to a hill where Paris was herding sheep. The shepherd Paris was a happy prince of troy. As his mother dreamed at his birth that she was bearing a piece of burning wood, the baby was regarded as representing the destruction of the city itself. To save the kingdom from the possible disaster, the parents had the helpless infant left on the top of Mt.Ida to die. However, he survived his ill fate. Brought up by the herdsmen, he became a strong, handsome lad, and was secretly united with a fair named Oenone. Beautiful Oenone had appreciated his charms as follows:
White-breasted like a star
Fronting the dawn he moved; a leopard skin
Dropp’d from his shoulder, but his sunny hair
And his cheek brighten’d as the from-bow brightens
When the wind blows the foan, and all my heart
Went forth to embrace him coming ere he came. (Bei Ta, 2005: 358)
Now, however, the smart man had to do thetask, which Zeus even felt troublesome. Hera promised Paris that he would be the King of Asia if the young gives the apple to her. Athena’s reward was a great fame in war; she thought the brave man would be keen on it. Venus’ promise was the most beautiful woman in the world. All of them tried their best to get that golden apple. Paris had forgotten he should be loyal to his wife Oenone, so he gave the apple to Venus.Naturally, Hera and Athena turned into his foes, and later they stand with Greek in the Trojan War. By the help of Venus, Paris very soon arrived in Geek by sea. Menelaus, the king of Sparta served him warmly. But the noble guest fell in love with Helen, the queen of Menelaus and persuaded her to elope with him to Troy. Then the ten years war between Greek and Troy broke out.
Helen of Troy美女 红颜祸水
Helen was the daughter of Zeus, whose matchless beauty and charms drew to many heroes from all parts of Greek. When still small she was carried off by Theseus who wished to marry her. But she was rescued later by her brothers and brought back to her native land. Her stepfather married her to Memelaus, king of Sparta. In spite of this, all others who proposed to her vowed that they would esteemher choice and they would fight for her if it was needed.
Helen and Menelaus had a happy married life until Paris came to visit Sparta. At the sight of Helen, Paris was ready to forget his Oenone, Helen forgot her marriage vows, too. They stole one another’s love in the absence of Menelaus, and by the help of Venus, Paris had persuaded Helen to elope with him
The angry Menelaus persuaded his brotherAgamemnon, and stressed the necessity of revenge on the Greek heroes. All of them had promised to fight for Helen vowed that they would defeat Trojan and bring her back. Then the Greek army sailed across the sea and surrounded the city of Troy and the war begun.
Although the war lasted more than tenyears, both sides suffered a great many of miseries, neither of them had blamed Helen. One time, a goddess called Helen to watch abattle that will break out. Helen walked towards the Scaesn Gate. In Iliad, Homer did not use a word directly to portray Helen’s matchless beauty, but describe the influence of her. When she was near to the castle, the king of Troy, her father-in-law and other gray leaders were sitting there. At the sight of Helen, they all highly praised her with one voice:
“No wonder such celestial charms
For nine long years have set the world in arms;
What winning graces! What majestic mien!
She moves a goddess, and she looks a queen.
Yet hence, oh heaven! Convey that fatal face;
And from destruction save the Troian race.” (Bei Ta, 2005: 370-371)
