Teaching analysis
Analysis of teaching material
The study skills part is about how to use formal and informal language. This task part is an article about a great person and students are expected to go through the information about Yuan Longping, and then finish Part B. Though students can use the information in Part A to finish Part B, it doesn’t mean students can write their own articles easily. So the teacher should encourage the students to cooperate with others and get some ideas for their writing.
Analysis of students
Students have learned a lot about the famous people from the previous parts of this unit. They can use what they learned about the famous people. But students may not know how to write the article better. So the teacher should give some suggestions on the structure of their writing.
Teaching objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
● master some important words and expressions: happen to, advantage, at present, increase, development and etc;
● learn to use formal and informal language;
● do independent research about a famous person;
● write a draft about a famous person;
● give a presentation to the class about a famous person.

Purpose
1.Lead-in

1.Explain:  
(1) What is “informal language”?
 Explain to the students the definitions of slang, abbreviations and contractions.
(2) How to express formally?
Tell the students when we should use formal or informal languages:
When you speak or write, you can use formal or informal language. You use formal language with your teachers or unfamiliar people.
However, when you speak or write to your friends , you can use informal language.
2. Help students understand the words on Page 31.
1.Students get to know What  “informal language”is and when to use.

2.Students understand Greetings, Endings, Idioms,Abbreviations and Contractions on Page 31.
To help students understand What  “informal language”is and when to use.
2.Practice
Ask students to finish the exercises on Page 31.Ask them to find out the mistakes in Kitty’s letter. Don’t forget to tell the reason.

3.Presentation

Free talk:
a.Do you know any famous people?
b.Who are they?
c.What did they do?
d.Why do you admire them?

Talk about the famous people they know.
To help students review what they learned and lead them to the topic today.
4. Practice
1.Tell students that Amy made some notes about Yuan Longping . Ask one student at a time to read a note . Encourage students to ask questions.

2.Ask students to show their answers to the five questions.

3.Ask students to complete Amy’s article in Part B . Remind them that they should use the information in Part A on Page32 to help them .
4.Once students have finished , read the text out loud for them . Pause at the blanks and ask the students to raise their hands if they know the correct answers . Complete this exercises as a class.
5.Ask students to read Amy’s  article and find out the main idea of each paragraph.
6.Encourage students to make an outline of the article.

d.Why did he begin research into hybrid rice?
e.What is his contribution to the world?
2.Students show their answers to the five questions.

How to write an article about a famous person:

a.Introduction :
Who is the person you want to write about.

Write some detailed information about his or her life.
c.Conclusion:
Explain why you admire him or her.

To help students learn about the content and the structure of the article.

1.Ask students to share their writing with their group members and try to make some improvements.
