Step 1. Duty Report
Ask one or two students on duty to give a report, the others listen carefully and answer the teacher’s questions.
Step 2. Review
1. Learn the new words and phrases by discussion and making sentences. E.g.
on business, be similar to, translate, translate…into, company, general, in general, besides, once in a while, whenever, divide, divide … into …, postman
2. Revise passive voice by interacting:
(1) Check the homework. S1: Trees are planted by people every year.

Step 3 Presentation
1. Lead in 1a
T: We all know English is spoken in many countries in the world. Now Jane’s father will go to Cuba on business. Is English spoken in Cuba? Will Jane’s father have any trouble? Let’s listen to the tape and mark the following sentences with (T) for True or (F) for False.
(1) Jane’s father is going to Cuba for traveling. ( )
(2) English is spoken as the official language in Cuba. ( )
(3) Spanish is similar to English. ( )
2. Read the dialog and find out the important and difficult points. Eg.

3. Listen to 1a again and follow the tape
4. Read 1a and finish 1b. Then check the answers.
Step 4 Consolidation
1. Ask the students to practise the dialog with the partner. After that, act it out in front of the class.
2. Encourage the students to retell the dialog in their own words?
They can begin like this: Jane’s father is packing his bags now. He’s going to Cuba on business….

3. Encourage the students to make similar dialog like this:

S1: Xiu Mei, why are you packing your bags?
S2: I’m going to Beijing.
S1: That’s great. There are many places of interest in Beijing, such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.
S2: Yes, the Great Wall is visited by many people every year.
S1: Maybe you will meet some trouble when you are on your trip. You’re a stranger in Beijing.
S2: It doesn’t matter I will take a map with me. If necessary, I’ll ask a policeman for help.
S1: OK! Have a good trip then!
4. Encourage the students to read 2a and answer the following questions:

②Has Jane’s father ever traveled to a country where English is not spoken?

5. Ask the students to pick up the difficulties and discuss: eg

1. Read 2a and finish 2b by asking and answering questions:
