Brave to take risk
It’s a story about adventure, bravery, unity, friendship, and the most important, a little timid boy’s tremendous change.
At the beginning, I would like to make a summary about this brilliant novel.
Part one: the origin of adventure
In this part the author made a detailed introduction about the old seaman called Bill, and actually the whole story was begun with him. He came to the little dramatis personae Jim’s inn in order to dodge other pirates’ hunt. In little Jim’s view, the old seaman is a tall, strong man with a cut across one check, he always keep silent and spent all day walked around the cove, or up on the cliffs; all evening sat in a corner of the room, drank rum and water. When he was drunk, he talked about the terrible stories of his wild and criminal life at sea. Those experiences frightened other clients a lot, so they soon learned to leave him alone. Another strange thing is that the old seaman always asks if any seaman had gone along the road, and promised to give Jim a silver coin every month to watching for a seaman with one leg. During this time Dr Livesey came to see my ill father, and had a short struggle with that captain, but at last the captain put away and sat down like a beaten dog.
One day, the Black dog appeared, and had a furious fight with the captain. Although the captain wounded black dog, himself felt ill too. After that struggle, captain became weaker; finally he told me about the secret and asked Jim to help him to spy on those dangerous pirates. However, just the same day, Jim’s poor fathers passed away, so the little boy was too busy to pay attention to that old man. However just the day after the funeral, the blind man Pew came suddenly and gave captain something, then went out of the inn. At this time captain opened his hand and saw it was the black spot, so the captain made a loud sound and dead.
After captain dead, Jim told his mother everything, and decided to run to the village to hide. However, since Jim’s mother insisted to take just what her owed and went on counting coins until they heard the noise which Jim once heard form the blind man’s stick. At that time, they faced such a hazardous situation and were almost caught by those vicious pirates. But luckily, they met Captain Dance- the law officer from the nearby town who had chased the pirates for a long time. Mr. Dance saved the poor boy and his mother, and then he took Jim to the Dr Livesey. It’s Squire Trelawney’s home where Jim told them all the things he had experienced and they made a plan to go to the treasure island to get the fortune.
Part two: the voyage to treasure island
After received squire Trelawney’s letter which told Jim that he had had everything ready and asked him to come to Bristol to begin their trip. When Jim came to Bristol, he met Silver, a seaman with only one leg. The little boy was attracted by his ample experiences and thought highly of that man. In sixth chapter, author showed us the ship and its men, especially the Captain Smollett. Through the conversation between captain and doctor, we can find out that the captain was an experienced seaman and arranged everything correctly. Unfortunately, the ship cook Silver was actually a fiendish pirate, and he tried to persuade a young seaman to join in his team and killed Jim and his companions. All those words they said was heard by the boy, no matter how scare he felt, he knew he must calm down and found a chance to get out of the apple barrel to tell his friends about this terrible thing. When doctor, squire and captain heard this serious matter they decided to wait and watch carefully to distinguish their men from pirates.
Part three: Board on treasure island
This is the most exciting part, during this part, Jim and his companions rallied to fight with those minister pirates. At first, Silver instigated some seamen to participate in his team and they left the ship for the island, however, Jim secretly followed them. On the island, Jim watched Silver killed the honest man Tom, and he met a man lived on the island for three years named Ben Gunn. After the poor man told Jim about his story, they came to hill and found his companions inside the stockade. The second day, Silver came towards the stockade and wish to make peace with those brave men, but they refused and let the vicious pirates to leave. So Silver brought his pirates to begin the battle, though the brave team won the battle, the captain was wounded. After dinner, the doctor walked off the hill and going to see Ben Gunn, so Jim had an idea to go and look for Ben Gunn’s boat.
Part four: Sea adventure
Jim climbed out of the stockade and made his way to the place where Ben’s boat was hidden, and used this boat to get to the ship. When he climbed up to the boat and found that two men had killed each other and Israel Hands was seriously hurt, Jim saved Hands’ life and Hands taught Jim how to sail the ship in return. But crisis came again, Hands plotted to kill Jim, using wisdom Jim found out the conspiracy and defeated Hands successfully. The timid boy became a valiant, he took the ship from sea and this ship was the most important thing for them to go back to home.
Part five: the final fight
When Jim came inside the stockade, he found no sounds, except for the wind in the trees. He mistook his companions’ voice for pirates’ snore. When he walked in happily, Silver’s parrot found him and raised the alarm. All pirates woke up and as a result, Jim became a prisoner of the enemy. Due to Jim’s dangerous circumstance, Dr Livesey promised he would try his best to save Silver’s life if they get out of this island. After eating their breakfast, they started to go to get the treasure. During the expedition, each felt quite agitated. Nevertheless, it was amazing to found out that there was nothing left in the hole, the treasure had disappeared. Seeing this, pirates began to shot at Jim and Silver. It was quite an emergency, Jim and Silver was ready to fight. But those pirates would never had chance to speak again, Jim’s friends was coming, they killed three pirates and the other hurried running into trees. The courageous team won the battle.
Finale: Goodbye Treasure Island
The second day, they moved all the gold to the beach, then they took it by boat to the Hispaniola, and to be honest, it’s really a big job to do. After they finished the work, one sunny morning, they sailed out of North Inlet and towards the nearest port in Spanish America. Before afternoon, Treasure Island had disappeared from view, and became a forever memory to those survivors. When they arrived the anchor, they detected that insidious pirate-Silver had gone on the sneak with three or four hundred Guineas, and never been heard any more.
Different character, different characteristic
Squire Trelawney: A loyal, simple and honest man. Maybe sometimes he would make mistakes by judging a man’s behaviors. But he is always willing to say sorry to anyone he had mistaken. When they were in danger, he never gave up his companion and persists in fighting with enemies. He was epitome of loyalty and chivalry.
Dr Livesey: A kind, prudent man, with pleasant way of speaking. He is also a resourceful man who thought out the stratagem to defeat pirates. When Jim was trapped in stockade, he made a bargain with Silver to guarantee Jim’s safety. Thing that Dr Livesey had done was conspicuously a symbol of kind-hearted.
Captain Smollett: A practiced seaman who was attentiveness to duties. He was the first one to notice the danger of this voyage, and warn the doctor about the probable mutiny, and just because of these actions they were saved.
Jim Hawkins: As the novel’s dramatis personae, little Jim was a timid and shy boy. When he first met the blind Pew, he was so frightened that he obeyed the pirate’s word without question and took him to the old seaman. But since he started his voyage with his friends, he had enormous transformation. At the beginning of the voyage, Jim was only a waiter in the cabin. But he was able to fight with enemies, and recapture the ship from those dangerous pirates. That’s amazing and admirable. He is the perfect model of brave and quick-witted.
Silver: It’s a complicated person, on one hand: he is extremely cunning and cruel; he can kill two men without saying anything; on the other hand, he was quite clever, when he knew the boat was kept by doctor, he soon made a bargain with him to make sure he can stay alive. When everything was over, he took some money and disappeared stealthily. So, although he was a vicious pirate, I have to say, he was extremely intelligent.
Summarize: Throughout the whole novel, we can find that the most important thing the author wanted to tell us is be brave and never give up easily.
Brave is the inner resources which is necessary when we come across some difficult situations. We need it to help us to face all the problems; we need it to help us speak out our ideas loudly; we need it to help us to insist on the real thing we want to do.
In the modern society, there are full of chances and challenges around every corner. If we want to grasp the chances and create a career of our own, we should get rid of the personalities like timid cowardice. Our society is just like a changeable sea, we should brave enough to adventure and seek for our own treasure.
Brave has a close relationship with risk-taking. If we want to gain the character of brave, we should be ready to take risk, dare to explore the new area. If we want to be surviving in the new century and be successful, we should be adventurers in the sea of life. It is said that the best stock exchange brokers in America are people who are used to be athletes and not the graduates of finance. Because they have strong bodies that can do hard work, smart responses, confident to be successful and the most important are that they dare to make key decisions and be ready to take risk. Therefore the parents in China should give the pupil the chance to adventure.
Let go of the children. Let them feel the world by themselves, explore the unknown world and gain experiences by themselves. Do not just tell them what should be done and what should be not. Do not stop them just because you think it is wrong or unreasonable. Give them the freedom to attempt to do new things. Taking risk means that we might come across difficulties, unknown dangerous and failures. Parents should not abuse children for they have done some seems silly explorations. If we all do things in the same way, there would be no creations. The kids are curious about the world and always have new ideas. We should encourage them to do some discovery.
Risk-taking is very important in our study. We all know that we should not wait to be responded by the teachers. We should take risk to find the way to study that suit us best. When we meet a tough math problem and just be given the right answer, we would never know the process of the thoughts that how the problem be solved without attempting to do it by ourselves. To be a student is to take risk. Yet most education discourages people from venturing far enough to take risks to make mistakes. One educator said that children enter school as question marks and leaves as periods. By learning to find one right answer, we may have relinquished our ability to find other answers and solutions. We should take risk to try different approaches and do things that have no precedence in our experience. We would make mistakes, but a creative person uses theses “failures” as stepping stones.
After read this novel, I think we should strongly believe that the justice will eventually conquer the evil. We always see the bad person is punished in the end. We are all kind in nature and love our lives, so we believe that justice is always along with us. Be brave, never succumb to difficulties. We can also be Jim Hawkins in our lives!
