III. Background Information
1. About Doctors
Doctors refer to physicians and other medical healers. In the United States they are called health care professionals, which include physicians, surgeons, dentists. Most of them work in health care services, which involve diagnosing and treating patients. Others work mainly in researching, teaching, or administration of medical facilities.
General practitioners:(全科医生)

They may not have special training in any particular medical field, but develops a wide knowledge of all kinds of illness.
Specialists:(专家，专科医生)
Some doctors prefer to treat only certain kinds of illness, thus becoming specialists in their chosen field.
Researchers: (医学研究人员)
Those doctors often help teach future physicians in medical schools. At the same time, they use the laboratories and hospital facilities of the medical schools to conduct research programs.
VI. Intensive Reading
1. “In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed by greater needs: the need to shelter from brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy; to expose corruption or to promote the public interest. ” (Para 1)
1) What is the grammatical function of the sentence after the colon?
◆… greater needs: the need … 这里冒号后面的句子是前面great needs 的同位语。
2) Translate the sentence into Chinese.
◆医疗行业与法律、政府及其他行业一样，往往对诚实与否的问题看得不那么重要。相比之下要紧的倒是另外一些事情。譬如，应设法避免可怕的消息造成的打击，或是考虑恪守保守秘密的诺言, 或是需要揭露腐败或促进公众利益。
2. As one physician wrote: “Ours is a profession which traditionally has been guided by a precept that transcends the virtue of uttering the truth for truth’s sake, and that is ‘as far as possible do no harm.’ ” (Para. 4)
1) Paraphrase this long sentence.
◆“We doctors have long been guided by a principle that is above the morality of telling the truth as an end in itself and that principle is that we must try our best not to do our patients any harm.”
3. “They may prescribe innumerable placebos, sound more encouraging than the facts warrant, and distort grave news, especially to the incurably ill and the dying.” (Para. 5)
1) Paraphrase the sentence.
◆They may say some words that are more encouraging than the patients’ real state deserves and give a false or misleading account of the seriousness of their condition. This happens especially to the incurably ill and the dying patients.
4. “But the illusory nature of the benefits such deception is meant to produce is now coming to be documented.” (Para.6)
1) Paraphrase the sentence.
◆But the evidence is being provided which shows that the benefits such deception is expected to produce are false by nature.
2) Translate the sentence into Chinese.

5. “We are becoming increasingly aware of all that can befall patients in the course of their illness when information is denied or distorted.” (Para. 7)
1) Analyze the structure of this sentence.
◆“We are becoming more aware of / that …” is a very common and often-used structure in the argumentative essay writing. Eg.
◆We are becoming more aware of the dangers of excessive smoking.
6. “Nurses may bitterly resent having to take part, day after day, in deceiving patients, but feel powerless to take a stand.” (Para.10)
1) Why is it difficult for nurses to take a stand?
Because nurses are not powerful enough to fight against doctors, so they feel unable to make objections.
7. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” (Para.11)
1) Why does the author use the inverted order here?
◆ This inverted order is used here to achieve a formal and dignified tone.

5. promote: vt.
