Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT) is a time-honored university of science and technology located in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province. Established in 1919 as Gansu Provincial Polytechnic School, it was entitled to enroll 4-year undergraduates in 1958 and was formally named Gansu University of Technology in the same year. It was put under the administration of the First Machinery Industry Departmentn in 1965 and was transformed into an institute under the administration of both the central and local governments with the latter shouldering the major responsibility in 1998. In 2003, it was renamed Lanzhou University of Technology.
In its development of over 90 years, LUT has become a university of science and engineering with coordinated development of multiple disciplines in science, engineering and liberal arts and distinctive features of its own. It has a comprehensive university with multiple layers and types of personnel training system including doctors, masters and bachelors, functioning as a pillar in social and economic development in the west part of China.
LUT enjoys a high discipline level and ranks among the first group of universities with bachelor and master degree authorization in China. It is the first in Gansu province to be authorized to confer doctoral degree and set up the center for post-doctoral studies in engineering. It is entitled to confer the title of professor in 10 subject areas. Currently, it has 12 key subjects of the provincial level, 3 centers for post-doctoral studies, 5 primary discipline doctoral programs, 25 subordinate discipline doctoral programs, 16 primary discipline master programs, 64 subordinate discipline master programs. In addition, it is authorized to confer master degree of engineering in 17 subjects and master degree for university teachers who study in service in 64 subjects. It also has the MBA and MPACC programs. So far, the University has 53 specialties for 4-year undergraduates, among which 6 rank among the state feature specialties, namely, Thermal Energy and Power Engineering, Material Shaping and Control Engineering, Mechanical Design and Automation, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Civil Engineering and Automation. Welding Technology and Engineering is not included in the subject catalog for undergraduates made by the Ministry of Education. Wind Power Engineering is one of the few experimental college subjects not included in this catalog. Functional Material is listed in the strategic subjects of new industries.
Its undergraduate education covers 6 subject categories like engineering, science, economics, management, literature and law while the graduate education involves 7, namely, engineering, science, management, pedagogy, literature, law and medicine. Altogether, LUT has 17 schools and 1 teaching and research division with more than 38,000 students among which 3,552 are postgraduates and 24,000 are undergraduates.
At present, LUT has 1,506 teaching staff among whom there is 1 academician shared with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 11 national or provincial experts, 12 members of Steering Committee of Professional Teaching under the Ministry of Education, 2 State-level teaching teams (39 members), 95 provincial subject leaders, 36 leading talents of Gansu Province, 27 “555”innovative personnel of Gansu Province, 23 “333” technical personnel in Gansu Province, 5 provincial star teachers, 66 doctorial tutors, 191 professors and 472 associate professors. In addition to this, LUT engages 283 celebrated experts and scholars both home and abroad.
As one of the higher learning institutes listed in the National College Students Innovative Experiment Plan and an excellent one in the undergraduate teaching proficiency evaluation by the Ministry of Education, LUT possesses 1 State Teaching Demonstration Center, 6 Provincial Teaching Demonstration Centers and 3 Provincial Engineering Personnel Training Bases. The primary employment status of graduates has remained over 95% for many years, ranking the first among colleges and universities in Gansu Province. Ever since its establishment, it has trained more than 130,000 high-level personnel for the country.
LUT is one of the first state model institutions for technological transfer. At present, the center has 1 state key laboratory, 1 engineering center cofounded by the central and local governments, 1 national university science and technology park, 5 key laboratories under the Ministry of Education and engineering research centers, 15 provincial research institutes.
In the recent 3 years, the University has undertaken 1,632 projects of science and technology including the national “973” and “863” projects and has gained more than 200 scientific and technological achievements, winning more than 60 awards beyond provincial level. Meanwhile, it has obtained 306 patents and 109 authorizations, ranking the first in Gansu Province and among the top 60 in the country.
In the recent 3 years, over 6,000 papers have been published by LUT staff in journals and periodicals home and abroad and the numbers of those published in leading journals and periodicals and those cited by EI respectively rank the 90th and the 75th among the universities and colleges in China. The Journal of LUT has been the winner of awards such as the “100 Key Journals of China National Periodical Award”, “Excellent Technical Journals from Universities in China” and so on.
LUT is the 1st local university in Gansu Province and the 27th in China to establish PLA Reserve Official Selecting and Training Office and has formed cooperative relations with 21 cities. In addition, it has set up engineering research centers with 24 enterprises, founded the board of committee together with 65 enterprises and institutions and established 179 personnel training and teaching practice bases. Currently, it has reached friendly and cooperative employment agreement with more than 420 employers across the country and has set up 390 employment bases for graduates.
LUT has successfully established academic cooperation and exchange programs with over 60 universities in countries and regions such as the U.S.A., U.K., Russia, Japan, Australia and so forth. Annually, more than 100 visiting scholars from abroad come to the University and over 100 teachers from the University are sent abroad as visiting scholars. Currently, LUT is authorized to enroll oversea students sponsored by government scholarship. The two campuses of LUT cover a total area of 2,430 mu (162 hectares) with a building area of 967,000 square meters. The library has a collection of 1,682,000 paper books and 10,200 GB electronic ones. The fixed asset arrives at 1.314 billion yuan and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 350 million yuan. A campus computer system with information management and teaching platform is available which makes online work, teaching, management and service possible.
