Should the Media Apologize for Inaccurate Reporting?
Recently, the issue of whether or not the media should apologize for inaccurate reporting has been in the limelight and has set off fierce debate in the public. Views on this issue vary from person to person.
Many people claim that the media are obliged to apology if their reports are not accurate. As the communicant and supervisory power, the media should bear the responsibility of guaranteeing objectivity and authenticity the soul of the news reports. Otherwise, either the public are inclined to be misled or the interested party’s reputation and fame would be negatively affected. But others examine this issue from another angle. They hold the view that the objectivity and truth in news reports are not absolute. In this sense, as long as the intentions of the media are pure, any mistakes they make in reporting should be tolerated by the public.
As far as I am concerned, I stand on the side of the former view. At the public eyes, the media are bound to respect and protect people’s rights to get the real story. In this case, if any inaccurate reporting occurs, the media have no reason to escape from admitting and apologizing for their mistakes.
