Unit3 Old Tom the Killer Whale

Teaching Aims:
1. To make students know more about whales.
2. To develop students’ skimming and scanning reading skills.
3. To encourage students to raise questions and express their ideas in English through discussion.
Teaching Important & Difficult Points：
1. To make students know how the killers helped the whalers.
2. To educate students to protect animals and make students develop a sense of environmental protection.
Teaching Focus:
1. Train students’ reading skills.
2. Develop students’ abilities to catch information, analyze and solve problems through reading activities.
Teaching Procedures：
Step 1．Warming up
1．Do a riddle(谜语) to see how clever you are.
I am the largest animal in the world, living in the sea. I breathe air but I'm not a fish. My name begins with w and ends with e. What am I ?
2．Watch a video to get more about whales.
Purpose: Students will show great interest in whales and they will be ready for the class.
Step 2．Skimming to get the main idea
Fill in the blanks using 2 verbs(动词)
The passage is about 2 stories of Old Tom.

Purpose: Students will learn to skim to find the topic paragraph and catch the information. So they will grasp the main idea quickly.

Purpose: Students can learn to raise questions, analyze and solve problems. Meanwhile, they can develop a sense of teamwork and show themselves. So they can attack their limitations and build their confidence.
Step 4．Summary
Old Tom helped the whalers hunt the whales.
Killer whales are human being’s friends.
Old Tom protected the whaler from the shark.
Purpose: Students can stress what has been learned in this lesson and draw a conclusion: We should protect whales.
Step 5. Watch a video about people killing whales
Purpose: Students will sense that it is cruel to kill whales and they will be inspired to think more about the phenomenon. Meanwhile, they will get ready for the discussion.
Step 6．Discussion
Nowadays, the whales are in danger and they are dying out. Because many countries kill them for different use, especially Japan.
In groups discuss why we should protect whales and how to protect them.

Purpose: Students can further develop a sense of teamwork and they will be confident to express their ideas. By discussion, students can get moral education and their enthusiasm in English learning can be increased.
Step 7．Homework
Write a short passage according to the discussion.
