Fifty-eight years ago, a spark of hope rose from the ashes of a devastating Second World War. It ignited the human spirit in the higher cause of peace, equality, order and economic and social progress. In that defining moment in the lives of people and of nations, the United Nations was created, not to protect the interests of the powerful and influential, but as an organization dedicated to the service of all the people of the world. A mutual understanding of the importance of multilateralism was enshrined in the ideals of the Charter.
On this United Nations Day, dedicated to celebrating our premier international organization, we are reminded that even as the world all around us continues to change, the imperative which led to the founding of our United Nations has not changed. We can still say with confidence that the global community truly believes in the United Nations Over 130 heads of State and government and ministers participating in the general debate of the fifty-eighth session of the General Assembly reaffirmed their faith in the United Nations, as our best hope for a better world.
We can, therefore, reflect with pride on the many accomplishments of the United Nations family. It has extended its reach into every corner of the globe, providing critical leadership and partnerships to promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; to fight deadly diseases, including HIV/AIDS; to mitigate the plight of the vulnerable groups in society, including refugees, women and children; to advance initiatives for sustainable development, protection of the environment and poverty alleviation; to combat transnational crime and criminality and terrorism; and to help keep the peace.
I extend my sincere good wishes to Secretary-General Kofi Annan and colleagues who work in the United Nations family, as we join hands with people around the world to celebrate United Nations Day.

It is a special pleasure for me to join you today, and to receive an honorary degree from this distinguished institution of higher learning. The unique bonds between the United Nations and Seton Hall's School of Diplomacy and International Relations date back to the founding of the School and the partnership role that UNA-USA played in that process. As you heard earlier, we are lucky to have Bill Lewis here with us, a great leader of the UNA-USA. They are being renewed today by the School's visionary decision to accept the role of coordinating secretariat for the Year of Dialogue among Civilizations.
I am grateful that the School of Diplomacy has agreed to support the work of my Personal Representative for the Dialogue among Civilizations, Giandomenico Picco. He has informed me of the important contribution that the School, under the leadership of Ambassador Constantinou, has made.
Today, I wish to share some thoughts with you on the Dialogue among Civilizations, and how I believe the idea of such a dialogue is rooted in the fundamental values that the United Nations has sought to advance over half a century.
The dialogue among civilizations should be held at Seton Hall, and it should be held at the United Nations, and wherever people of good will seek to bridge differences and advance peace, drawing on the best of humanity's rich and diverse past to improve our common future. In that spirit, let me thank you again for honouring me this evening.

The eternally young spirit of America has been a source or strength all of you bring forth today and has been a beacon of hope to the world. That optimism, faith, and confidence in our country has made our country young.
In my travels as speaker, I have met with presidents, prime ministers, and Icings. But what impressed and inspired me the most were my encounters with young people. At a time when some world leaders question the value of constructive dialogue with our adversaries, young people are engaged in their own international dialogue, on campuses and through email and instant messaging and blogs. They are talking about their hopes for a brighter future — of their desire for peace and prosperity...
My message (o the graduates today is: "Know your power and follow your passion — the power and passion that spring from the beauty of your dreams, the depth of your imagination and the strength of your values. " I have confidence that you will succeed because of the magnificent education you have received at USF. I want to extend my congratulations to the class of 2007, wish you well and let you know you have a friend in the Speaker's office. Thank you and God bless you.

总统女士，至于香港与拉脱维亚的玖边关系，可以说是日趋密切，令人欣慰。今年10月起实施的互免签证协议，促进了旅游和商务往来；相信今后还会有更多香港人善用这项便利，到贵国旅游。我们两地学校互有交换生，本港大学也有来自拉脱维亚的教授。文化方面，拉脱维亚国家歌剧团曾应邀来港表演，本地电影节也选映过优秀的拉脱维亚作品。
另一方面，我们的双边贸易在过去四年，每年增长超过12%。香港和拉脱维亚很多经济重点都很相近，包括物流、通讯、贸易和金融服务。贵国商界人士只要能来港一趟，必会同意我们是国际商贸上的上佳合作伙伴。
全球经济放緩之下，贵国却日益兴旺，过去两年每年经济都有超过6%的可观增长，令人欣羡；又能把通胀控制在低水平，的确难得。

Welcome to the Harvard experience that awaits you. I would also like to extend a special welcome to the transfer students and their families who are here with us this evening.
Having just finished my freshman year as President I can recall how you must feel. While I'm beginning to develop the capacity to keep straight FAP, FUP, FOP and even FD03 — there is much that I still have to learn.
I think I can make one determination this evening with absolute confidence. You are without a doubt among the top two classes admitted to this University during my tenure here as President.
But seriously, this class is a truly remarkable group of people — you include professional musicians and successful entrepreneurs, published scientists and poets, star athletes and dedicated social service providers, speakers of more than a dozen languages, and experts in countless areas. Each one of you stands out for your potential.
Reading your admission essays, I was reminded that Newton and Einstein did most of their thinking about physics in their 20s, Alexander conquered most of the known world by the time he was 30, and when he was the age of a Harvard graduate, Mozart had composed all of his violin concertos. Of course when he was my age, he had been dead for 14 years.
So — not to put too much pressure on you — enjoy the rest of Freshman Week and then get cracking.

But that is not to say anyone should ever feel intimidated. Everyone here belongs, and everyone will find their place.
It was William Butler Yeats who said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. " If I have but one wish for each of you, it is that in the years ahead you be set on fire, that your mind be captured by some area of human understanding, that you develop a passion for understanding, for comprehending, for progressing, that is so central to successful people everywhere. The University and its faculty have no more important goal than helping you in this quest.
Fires cannot be controlled, passions cannot be predicted, and you are all very different people. But let me give you this advice as you embark on your journey here at Harvard.
First, follow your passion, not your calculation. Do or pursue what captures your imagination. Don't let anything stand in the way of your curiosity, of what you really want to do.
Second, be open to every possibility. For most of you sitting in this place, four years from now what will have been most important at Harvard is something you do not now imagine.
Third, learn how to learn. Any fact that you encounter in your studies now is not very likely to remain very relevant and important over your whole career, unless of course you want to retire when you are 37.
Fourth, learn from each other. Much of the most important learning you do here will be from each other. You will maximize that learning if you take advantage of the diversity of the Harvard community, reaching out to people from very different backgrounds than your own.

Madam President, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honour to welcome you Madam President here today. I am pleased that we can spend a few days here together in Hong Kong after your official visit to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an. I congratulate you on your very successful state visit.
Since the reform and opening of the People's Republic of China some 25 years ago. there have been enormous changes on the Mainland. You would have seen first-hand during your visit to the Mainland the dramatic and breathtaking progress in the social, political and economic fronts in our country, the progress that we are all very proud of. The achievements on the economic front are also impressive.
At the same time, Hong Kong'own economic recovery is gaining steam after several years of very painful restructuring. Our economy is forecast to grow by six per cent this year. Property and stock markets have rebounded, and unemployment is slowly declining. The Central People's Government has been strongly supportive of our effort to restructure our economy. Also, we are working ever more closely with the Central Authority, under the "One Country, Two Systems" concept, which has proven highly successful since the reunification in 1997.
Madam President, Hong Kong is determined to maintain our position as the premier business platform for the world to enter the Mainland market, and for Mainland companies to reach out to the world.
Madam President, as for Hong Kong's bilateral relationship with Latvia, I am happy to say it is flourishing. The visa-free travel agreement implemented in October this year has promoted tourism and business alike, and I look forward to seeing more Hong Kong tourists taking advantage of this convenience to visit Latvia. We already have exchanges of students, and a number of Latvian professors teaching at our universities. On the cultural front, we have been fortunate enough to take in performances by the Latvian National Opera, as well as quality Latvian movies at our film festivals.
At the same time, our bilateral trade relationship has grown at an annual rate of over 12 percent in the past four years. Hong Kong and Latvia also share many of our economic pillars, including logistics, communications, trading and financial services. There is no better time for Latvian businesses to come and see for themselves that Hong Kong would be their ideal partner in the international trade arena.
I am also delighted to note that the Latvian economy has grown from strength to strength despite the slowdown in the world economy, with an enviable annual growth of over six per cent per year over the last two years, and with an inflation kept at a very low level.
I am glad that you have chosen to visit Hong Kong at this time, Madam President. I am sure that Latvia, after becoming a member of the EU, will further enhance its position as the financial and trading centre of the Baltic region and for Europe. This is a great honour, and I would like you all to stand and join me in a toast:
To you, Madam President, and to the ongoing friendship between the Republic of Latvia and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China.
