当直译行不通的时候，或者可能引起误解的时候，则要考虑采取意译：
1. He was lying on his back. 他仰卧着。（他脸朝上躺着。）
2. The style is the man. 文如其人。
3. Don’t cross the bridge till you get to it. 车到山前必有路。
The last thing I want in this world is to hurt you. 在这个世界上我最不愿意做的事就是伤害你的感情。
4. Let’s meet half way. 让我们各让一步。

（一） 误译解析：
【例1】The telephone rang constantly, but he was not interrupted.
误译：电话不停地响，但是他没有被打断。
电话不停地响，但他没有接。
【例２】 Getting money from him is like getting blood from a stone.
误译：找他要钱好比从石头里抽血
从他身上要钱好比从铁公鸡上拔毛。
【例3】Next to no wife, good wife is best.
误译：娶妻应该宁缺毋滥。
没有老婆最好，有个好老婆次之，最差是娶了坏老婆。
【例4】He gets up very early and sits up very late and is burning the candle at both ends.
误译：他起早睡晚，一根蜡烛两头点。
他起早睡晚，精力迅速消耗。
【例5】American football has a reputation for being a brutal and dangerous game. This reputation is not really deserved.
误译：美式足球向来以粗鲁、危险闻名，其实名不符实。
人们都说美式足球是野蛮而危险的运动，事实并非如此。
