Part one Chinese-English
1. 各位还将欣赏由本公司一些才华横溢的青年员工所表演的中国味纯正的文艺节目。今晚我们会过得非常愉快。平日在公司上班时，我们中外职员几乎没有时间坐下来交谈。我希望这次晚会可以让我们有极好的机会，可以无所拘束地了解彼此的情况，增进个人之间的友谊。
Later on, you will enjoy the authentic Chinese entertainment performed by some talented young employees from our company. We will have a lot of fun tonight. While at work in the company, we, Chinese as well as overseas staff of the company, hardly get to sit down and talk to each other. I hope this party will give us an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better in a more informal way and increase personal friendships.

2. 我谨代表我们一行的全体成员，感谢董事长先生的盛情邀请，使我们来到装饰得如此华丽的大厅，参加如此欢快的圣诞晚会。
圣诞节是一个十分欢愉的节日，这的确是一年中的良辰佳时。圣诞节对我们所有人都有其引人之处，那就是人间的温暖、爱恋、关怀、团聚、融洽和奉献。这就是圣诞节的精神所在。
On behalf of all the members of my group, I'd like to thank you, Mr. Chairman, for your gracious invitation for us to attend such an enjoyable Christmas party in such a magnificently decorated hall.
     Christmas is a very happy and joyous occasion. It is really a wonderful time of the year. There is something in this holiday which appeals to everyone. That is, warmth, love, care, union, harmony and dedication of mankind. This is the spirit of the Christmas holiday.

3. 同世界其它地区一样，节日在中国是人们勤于烹调、饱享口福的时候。菜市场鱼肉满架，购物和烹调成了人们的主要活动。但是除了节庆膳食在数量和质量上与平日不同之外，一些历史悠久、具有象征意义的特色食物也是节日必不可缺的伴侣。
Like in the rest of the world, holidays in China are a time for serious cooking and delighted eating. Grocery markets are well stocked with all kinds of fish and meat and shopping and cooking become major activities. But in addition to the quantitative and qualitative differences apparent in holiday meals, some special traditional foods and their symbolic significance are indispensable on these occasions.

Welcome to the Silk Road Tour! You will find this two-week trip one of your most memorable experiences in your life.
The Silk Road dates back to the second century B. C. when a Chinese official and envoy of the royal court Zhang Qian embarked on his business trip to Xiyu (meaning western countries) following this trade thoroughfare linking Asia and Europe.  Originating from Chang'an (the present-day Xi'an), the route traversed Shaanxi Province, the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, the Pamir mountain region, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Syria, ending at the eastern shores of the Mediterranean. More than 4,000 of its 7,000 kilometers were in China.

5. 文化是指一个民族的整体生活方式。这一简单定义的含义使文化包括了这样一些内容，即一个民族的风俗、传统、社会习惯、价值观、信仰、语言、思维方式以及El常活动。文化还包含了文明史。从广义上说，有两种文化，即物质文化和精神文化。物质文化是具体的、可见的，而精神文化则比较蕴蓄、比较抽象。
Culture means the total way of life of a people. This simple definition implies that culture refers to the customs, traditions, social habits, values, beliefs, language, ways of thinking and daily activities of a people. It also includes the history of civilization. In the broad sense, there are two types of culture, that is, material culture and spiritual culture.  Material culture is concrete and observable, while spiritual culture implicit and abstract.

6. 中国作为一个发展中国家，面临着发展经济与保护环境的双重任务。从国情出发，中国在全面推进现代化的过程中，将环境保护视为一项基本国策，将实现经济持续发展视为一项重要战略，同时在全国范围内开展污染防治工作和生态环境保护活动。
自改革开放以来，中国国民生产总值的年均增长率为10％左右，同时环境恶化的状况已基本得到了控制，在许多地区还得到了改善。实践证明，我们协调经济发展与环境保护两者之间关系的做法是行之有效的。
As a developing country, China is confronted with the dual task of developing the economy and protecting the environment. Proceeding from its national conditions, Chin has, in the process of promoting its overall modernization program, made environmental protection one of its basic national policies, regarded the realization of sustained economic development as an important strategy and meanwhile, carried out throughout the country campaigns for pollution prevention and treatment as well as ecological environmental protection.
Over the years since its adoption of reform and opening policy, China's gross national product has achieved a sustained average annual growth of around 10 percent, while its environment has basically ceased from deteriorating, and proved in many areas. The end-results of our work have shown that China's endeavor in striking a balance between economic development and environmental protection has been effective.

7. 中国历史上许多诗人和高僧在浪迹名山时皆墨撒悬崖峭壁，以次抒发感情。所幸的是，他们的许多作品均被完好地保存了下来。除了石碑岩崖作品外，在丝绸和纸张上行文留字则是更为常见的书法形式。
Historically, many poets and senior monks wrote inscription on precipices to express their feelings when they visited famous mountains. Fortunately, many of their works have been well preserved. In addition to stone tablets and inscriptions on mountain precipices, calligraphy has also been practiced as more popular forms of art with silk and paper.

8. 在这个信息时代，世界已缩小为一个地球村。这个地球村里，不再有什么泾渭分明的东方世界和西方世界，我们是生活在同一个社区里的邻里。因此，我们彼此之间无需相互冲突。我们之间的关系是一种友好合作、平等互补的关系。我们应该相互理解，相互学习，和睦共处。
At this age of information, the world has shrunk as a global village in which there will be no clear-cut worlds of the East and the West any more, but a world of one community with neighboring families. Therefore, we do not necessarily have to come into clash with each other. Our relationship is one of friendly cooperation, equality and mutual complementarily and therefore, we should understand and learn from each other, and live in harmony.

9. 对于那些只熟悉普通欧洲语言的人来说，汉语是一种截然不同的语言。但是，如果我们仔细观察一下汉语的结构，我们便可以发现汉语的结构并非特别复杂。事实上汉语在许多方面较之西方语言更为简单。既然汉语与欧洲语言之间存有一些根本性的不同，那么对汉语结构及其历史发展过程有所了解将有助于各位学习汉语。
To people who are familiar only with the common European languages the Chinese language is strikingly different. Yet, when we exam in the structure of the Chinese language, we find that it is not conspicuously complex. Indeed, in many ways it is simpler than the Western languages. But since Chinese does differ from European languages in some fundamental respects, some knowledge of its structure and historical development will help you to learn the language.

10. 在西方人看来，汉语的书写体系是一种全新的体系：他们所看到的不是排列整齐、笔划简单的字母，而是数以千计、形态各异的文字，许多文字看上去错综复杂，笔划纵横交错得令人难以置信。对许多西方人来说，汉语听上去颇有旋律感，或许有点像在唱歌。你若透过汉语的表象看其内部结构，也许会有更多的惊讶。
To the Western eye the writing system of Chinese is altogether novel: instead of neat rows of simple alphabetic letters there are thousands of unique characters, many of which seem incredibly intricate. To the ear of many Westerners the language sounds rather melodious, perhaps a little like singing. When you peer below the surface, there may be more surprises for you.

Part two English-Chinese

1. It is indeed my pleasure and privilege to have received your gracious invitation and work with a distinguished group of people like Director Chen. I had been looking forward to this visit for years. I had a dream that someday I would visit China and work in the beautiful city of Shanghai for a while. I'm very grateful that you have made my dream come true.
受到贵公司的友好邀请．来此与陈主任这样杰出的人士一起共事．我深感愉快和荣幸。我曾梦想有朝一日能访问中国，能在美丽的上海工作一段时间。我很高兴您使我的梦想成了真。

2. There are three ways to get from city to city without a car. In some places, you can take Amtrak, the national passenger rail service. Or you can take a bus. Greyhound is the largest long distance coach company, which offers the monthly pass. And, of course, you can fly. There are dozens of airlines, both regional and national. Prices are not regulated, so airlines can make special offers that are sometimes cheaper than train tickets. There are also shuttle and commuter flights between some major cities that are close to each other.
要是没有小汽车，你去其他城市可以搭乘三种交通工具。在有些地方，你可以乘坐全国客运火车Amtrak。不然的话你可以坐长途．汽车，“灰狗”汽车公司是美国最大的长途汽车公司，有月票出售。当然罗，你也可以坐飞机旅行。美国有数十家国内和国际航空公司，全国没有统一的票价，所以航空公司可以削价，有时机票要比火车票便宜。一些相距不远的大城市之间，也有穿梭于两地之间的航班。

3. My wife and I have a special regard and personal friendship for the people of China. Beijing is for us an old and nostalgic home. During our stay here ten years ago we spent a great deal of memorable time with the people here -- working, shopping, sightseeing, and touring the city on our bicycles. During that time we never experienced anything other than the utmost courtesy and genuine friendship of the Chinese people.
我与我夫人对中国人民怀有一种特殊的敬慕之情和个人友谊。对我们两人来说，北京是我们思念的故乡。’10年前我们在此生活期间，我们与这里的人们一起度过了许多难忘的时光——我们在这里工作，购物，观光，骑自行车逛城。在那段时期中，我们所感受到的总是中国人民的高度礼貌和诚挚友情。

4. I'd like to take this opportunity to extend to Your Excellency an invitation to visit my country, so that we will have an opportunity to return the warm welcome and generous hospitality you extended to us.

5. A good wine, or a vintage champagne, is like a person you've met whose personality you don't forget. Likewise, a bottle of good champagne is nothing but the ideal companion for a delicious meal where you don't want your personality to be easily forgotten, either.
遇到一瓶上等葡萄酒，或者说一瓶精制香槟，就像遇到一个个性令你难以忘怀的人。同样，一桌美味佳肴，配以一瓶上等香槟助兴，你的个性也会给客人留下难以忘怀的深刻印象。

6. Our “program” is so much more enormously complex, though, that we might like to define “thinking” in terms of our creativity in literature, art, science and technology. In that sense, computers certainly can’t think. Surely, though, if a computer can be make complex enough, it can be as creative as we. If it could be made as complex as a human brain, it could be the equivalent of a human brain and do whatever a human brain can do.
我们大脑的“程序”复杂之极，我们或许可以从我们在文学，艺术，科学和技术上的创造力这个角度给“思维”下定义。从这个意义上说，电脑肯定无法思维。当然喽，如果电脑可以制作得具备足够的复杂性，它们也可以有同我们人类一样的创造性。假若电脑可以制作得同人脑一样复杂，电脑便可成为人类的同类，可以做人脑所能做的一切。

7. The medical profession is dedicated to the proposition that anything that can defeat disease and prolong life is unequivocally a good a good thing. The fear of death is one of the deepest and most abiding human passions, so it is understandable that we should celebrate any advance in medical technology that appears to put death off. But people worry about the quality of their lives as well ---not just the quantity. Ideally, one would like not merely to live longer but also to have one’s different faculties fail as close as possible to when death finally comes, so that one does not have to pass through a period of debility at the end of life.
医学界决意坚持这样一种主张，即任何一种能够攻克疾病、延年益寿的东西无疑都是好东西。对死亡的恐惧是人类最深刻、最持久的情感之一，所以我们欢庆任何一种看来能延迟死亡的医学技术成果都是可以理解的。但是，人们所关心的不仅是生命的长短，而且还担心生活的质量。理想的状况是，人们不仅希望活得更长久，而且也希望自己的各种身心功能尽可能持续到生命的最后一刻，以免在人生的末年度过一段衰弱的时光。

8. It is my sincere hope that we can develop further, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit, the links and the friendship that exist between our two countries. As we are both developing countries, having a common aspiration in improving the standard of life of our peoples, I look forward, in the next few days, to the opportunity of learning something from your endeavors and experience in promoting economic and social development in the service of your people.
我真诚地希望我们能够在相互尊重、互惠互利的基础上进一步发展我们两国之间业已存在的联系和友谊。我们都是发展中国家，有着提高我们自己国民生活水平的共同愿望，所以，我期待在今后的几天里有机会向你们学习，从你们为造福贵国人民而促进经济和社会发展的奋斗和经验中学到一些东西。

9. My visit is a symbol of the good faith with which we seek to build up the strength of our friendship, our cultural and commercial ties and our important strategic relationship. Events of the past decade have confirmed time and time again that our friendship and cooperation will continue to flourish and yield more fruits in the days to come.
我的访问是良好诚意的象征，我们怀着这种良好诚意，希望能在友谊的基础上建立文化和商业关系，建立重要的战略关系。过去的l0年一再证明，我们之间的友谊与合作将在未来持续发展并结出更多的果实。

10. What we see now is the Washington National Cathedral. The Washington National Cathedral is one of the largest and most famous religious centers in the United States. It belongs to the Episcopal Church. The official name of the building is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. But everyone calls it the National Cathedral because people of all religions are welcome to pray there.
现在我们所看到是华盛顿国家大教堂。华盛顿国家大教堂是美国规模最大、最负盛名的宗教中心之一，隶属主教派教会。该建筑的正式名称是圣彼得和圣保罗大教堂。但是人们叫它国家大教堂，是因为它欢迎任何教派的人到这里祈祷。
