1. In ancient china, private teachers travelled from state to state explaining their philosophy.
2. All three teachers believed in the importance of kindness and good government.
3. Ancient China was a place where states were often at war with each other.
4. But it was also a time when there were many great philosophers.
5. Mencius was a thinker whose teachings were similar to those of Confucius.
6. He spent his last years preparing a book of his teachings called The Book of Mencius.
7. Mencius believed that the reason why man is different from animals is that man is good.
8. Mozi was another teacher who was very influential. Born in 476 BC., he came from a family which was very poor.
9. In some ways, his beliefs were similar to those of Confucius.
10. As a result, he spent many years trying to find a state where people would follow his teachings.
11. He is a man of whom China can be proud.
12. Often, factory workers lived in poor and crowded conditions.
13. These changes became possible because of inventions such as steam engine.
14. From 1830 to the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution spread through Europe.
15. With the revolution, factories appeared and mass production became possible for the first time.

1. The great wall of China is the longest man-made structure ever built.
2. Most of the Great Wall dates from the Ming Dynasty.
3. It took six years to build and cost 20 million.
4. The airport is within five hours’ flying time of half the world’s population and is designed to accommodate 80 million passengers a year.

6. The power of Yangtze River which is the world’s third longest river, has been harnessed by the Three Gorges Dam.
7. The dam is nearly 200 meters high and 1.5 meters wide.
8. Sun Yat-sen, who was the leader of the 1911 revolution, first suggested the idea of a dam across the river.
9. Three quarters of the china’s energy is produced by burning coal.
10. Unfortunately, burning coal causes serious air pollution and increases global warming.
11. The dam will generate electricity equal to about 40 million tons of coal without causing so much air pollution.
