Welcome to Chongming. First on behalf of me and my travel agency, we sincerely hope that you have a enjoyable trip here. My English name is Chelsea, my Chinese name is Dong Juan. Dong is my family name, Juan is my given name. You can call me both: Chelsea or Dong Juan. I will be your local guide in Chongming, so if you have any requirements, please do not be hesitated to let me know. It’s my pleasure. We have another important member, our driver Mr. Zhang. You can call him Zhang shi fu. Shi fu means master representing the experienced driving skills. That’s a confirmation for driver’s hard work. When in Rome, do what Romans do. Now I tell you our itinerary today。We are planning to visit the Dongping National Forest Park in the morning ， Mingzhu Lake and Xisha Wetland in the afternoon.
It takes about 40 minutes to the Forest Park. I would like to give you a brief introduction about Chongming.

You have just passed through a bridge. Do you know its name? It’s called Yangtze River Tunnel Bridge. It has two parts: the tunnel and the bridge, hence the name. The tunnel bridge is 25.5 km long. The tunnel’s length is 8.9 Km, and the bridge’s length is 16.6 Km.
It takes 12.7 billion RMB. The tunnel joins the Pudong District and Changxing Island. the bridge joins Changxing island and Chongming island. We make space for the train so that in the future we can go through the tunnel bridge by railway transportation. It’s an amazing bridge. It makes local people’s 1300 years dream come ture. In past years, local people went to downtown by ship, because the waterway is the only way. In Chongming we have 7 passenger terminals, 16 ship routes. In bad weather it’s inconvenient. The tunnel bridge was opened to traffic last year. Now it only takes one hour from Chongming to Pudong District. The tunnel bridge is not only present the new achievement in the construction of Shanghai, but also demonstrates the Shanghai Expo Theme: “Better city, better life!”

This road sweeps round the island. It is 24.3 km and it’s called the “century avenue”.

It takes about an hour to our first destination, so I am very glad to give you a brief introduction about Chongming.
· Chongming is located on the estuary of Yangtze River. It’s the third biggest island in China. The first biggest one is Taiwan Island, the second biggest one is Hainan Island. It is surrounded by Yangtze River on three sides and the Eastern Sea on one side. It bears the reputation of “Gateway of Yangtze River, Fairyland of eastern Sea”. It covers a total area of 1411 square kilometers. and the population is 0.7 million. It has 1300 years long history. In 618 AD, there were two islands appeared here: Dongsha Island and Xisha Island. The two islands became a bigger one at the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, which is about 300 years ago. Now Chongming Country has 16 towns and 2 villages.
Now we are in Chongming Island. The Chongming country is divided into 7 parts: western part, eastern part, northern part, southern part middle part, Changxing island and Hengsha island. Each part has its own characteristic:
◆     Western part: Xisha Wetland and Mingzhu Lake;
◆     Eastern part: Dongtan Wetland which is an important place for birds of passage having a rest in the flyway of “East Asia-Austrialia”;
◆     Northern part: Bei Lake is the base of organic-rice;
◆     Southern part: local government was settled there. It is the center of Chongming area. You can enjoy the sight spots of Hanshan Temple, Shouan Temple, Sight-seeing Beach, Chongming Academy. Most of them are human landscapes.
◆     Changxing island: It’s a marine equipment island;
◆     Hengsha island: It’s undeveloped.
Chongming has many famous local products. It has five main product lines:
1, White goats; 2, Crabs; 3, Local vegetables; 4, fruits and flowers; 5, high-quality rice
Chongming had the plan to become the base of organic farm products for 2010 Expo. Thanks to the unique environment and special techniques, there are series of quality products: Chongming Golden Melon, Chongming sweet potatoes, Chongming rice wine and Chongming haricots.
But the most precious product in Chongming is its ecological environment. When you get off the bus, Chelsea suggests all of you take a deep breath. The air is pure and fresh here, which is in high quality. It shows that there are 1000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter. There are 10-20 in public places, 40 to 50 indoors, 100 to 200 in green lands and 10 thousand to 20 thousand in Dongping National Forest Park. It’s a natural oxygen bar. So in Chongming visitors can join many ecological festivals: “Forest Tourist Festival”, “Hundred-flowers Festival ”,“Orange Festival” etc.

Our first sightseeing in Chongming is the Mingzhu Lake. It’s located in the southwest of Chongming Island. It’s the biggest natural lake here. This lake is originally a branch of Yangtze River and was embanked at the beginning of 1970’s. It covers a water area of 2 square kilometers with the depth of 7-8 meters.
Around the lake we can see the forest with more than 50 kinds of trees: normal trees such as: Osmanthus tree, metasequoia tree, cedar tree etc and rare trees such as: red maple and Chinese small apple.

This park is located in the southwest of Chongming Island. It has an area of 300 hectares, and it’s the only natural wetland with natural tidal phenomena and woodland beach.
Different from Dongtan Wetland Park, one of Xisha Wetland Park’s important living conditions is the continuous tidal phenomena. The average time of the tides rising and falling is 12 hours and 24 minutes. Visitors can walk on the 2 kilometer-long wooden trestle to have an intimate contact with nature.

Chongming Academy Mansion is also called Chongming Museum. It is one of the three academy mansions in Shanghai. This museum was originally built in South Song Dynasty and was rebuilt in Ming Dynasty. It covers an area of 23.21 hectares. In ancient times this kind of place was built for commemorating Confucius and students to study here. Now it’s a museum with more than 1000 pieces of collections. You can see simple and tasteful archway and 350 year-long ginkgo trees.

This park is 2.5 km away from the center of the country. People feel mysterious about the place because of its long history. This is the only classical garden in the island. Jinao Hill was laid up in Song Dynasty and at that time it was a sign for navigation. Legends have been told generation after generation in local place. One of the stories goes like this: One year of Song dynasty, Chongming was rainless. The crops almost died. Then a legendary animal named Jinao appeared to spit out water. Thanks to it, the crops were saved, but Jinao died. People buried it with mud to remember it.
Now it’s a perfect place for local people to have weekend and visitors to enjoy their trip here.

This temple is next to the Jinao Park. It has an area of 7 hectares. As one of the four ancient temples in Chongming, it was first built by monk Lai Chong in Song Dynasty, more than 700 years. There were two 500-year old ginkgo trees and three figures of Buddha. Later the temple was ruined in the wars and rebuilt in 1983. Now it attracts tourists all around world.
