How to Be a Good Teacher

Some people say that “teachers are gardeners”, they “cultivate” young “plants”; Some people say that “teachers are candles”, they “light” others while “burning themselves up”; Some people say that “teachers are the engineers of the soul”, they “construct” the greatest “project” in the world; and many others. All these show the significance and responsibilities of teachers as well as their work. So as teachers, we must try to qualify ourselves to live up to the standards.
Firstly, good teachers must be devoted, loving kind and enthusiastic. They should have the desire to devote all their energies, and even their lives to the educational cause. They should love their students, just as they love their own children, no matter how clever or slow-minded they are. They should be kind and considerate to their students taking good care of their students heartily. And they must be enthusiastic about their work, willing to help their students whenever needed. All these are the necessary qualities as a good teacher. Education is a long-term course, and students are influenced and enhanced in every aspect in the course, especially in their minds. So, as teachers, we should pay attention to our own self-training, making ourselves excellent teachers with full personality.
Secondly, good teachers must have wide knowledge, high intelligence, profound meditation and rich imagination. Teachers are like the barns that provide students with the “corn” of knowledge, how can they achieve this goal with empty or inadequate barns? On the other hand, only “corn” is far from enough, they must let students know how to produce delicious foods from the corn for themselves. It is true that although there are menus for foods, however, outstanding cooks still use their significance and imagination to create new and better foods. So as teachers, we should, first of all, try to get wide knowledge so as to enhance our understanding, especially in the modern times of “knowledge explosion”, we should form the habit of meditating and imagining, only by these can we deal with anything happening around us, and seek effective and creative ways to improve our teaching.
Thirdly, good teachers should be good directors and artists. They should know how to direct the “players” to act in effective ways. Teaching is a kind of arts, teachers should study the arts of teaching, trying to arouse the students’ interest in the lessons, attracting their attention, analyzing students’ psychologies, and carrying out their teaching according to different students, so as to make them love the subject and learn it easily.
In short teachers are models for their students to follow. Whatever they do or whatever they say will certainly have a deep influence on their students. Just as we often mention, that teaching, the most glorious profession under the sun, teachers, the images in the students’ heart, we feel greatly honorable, while, at the same time we shoulder heavy responsibilities. As teachers, we must go all out so as not to disdain our duties.
