NvWa Mends the Sky

In ancient times, the four pillows which support the sky collapsed

and ancient China fell apart. The sky couldn’t cover the earth nor could

the earth foster all the things. The fire spread and couldn’t die out. The

flood overflowed and couldn’t cease. The fierce monsters devoured the

innocent people. The evil birds preyed on the old and children.

Then NvWa mended the sky with rocks of five colors. She cut off

legs from a giant turtle to support the four corners of the sky. She killed

the black dragon to save people in Jizhou, and then obstructed the flood

with the ash of bulrush in heaps.

Thus the sky was mended and the four pillows were erected. The

flood receded, and peace was restored in JiZhou. The vicious birds and

monsters were killed, and then the innocent people survived. NvWa

turned her back to the earth and embraced the blue sky. From then on,

poultry, monsters,insects and snacks all stopped to use teeth and

poisonous stings to hurt people. They all didn’t want to catch and kill

people.

When referred to her merit and contribution,the people in heaven

witnessed them and the death had deep feeling about them. People

built temples in honor of her. Her name was remembered by later

generations and her light shone on every creation.

女娲补天

往古之时，四极废，九州裂，天不兼覆，地不周载；火爁(làn 燃烧)焱(yàn,火花，火焰)而不灭，水浩洋而不息。猛兽食颛(zhuān仁慈：颛民:仁慈的百姓,)民，鸷(zhì,凶恶)鸟攫（jué，抓取：攫取（掠夺）。攫夺）老弱。

因而女娲炼五色石以补苍天，断鳌足以立四极，杀黑龙以济冀州，积芦灰以止淫水。 苍天补，四极正；淫水涸，冀州平；狡虫死，颛民生；背方州，抱圆天。当此之时，禽兽虫蛇，无不匿其爪牙，藏其蛰毒，无有攫噬之心。

女娲看到她的子民们堕入宏大灾难之中，十分关切，决心炼石以补苍天。因而她周游四海，遍涉群山，最后选择了东海之外的海上仙山—天台山。天台山是东海上五座仙山之一，五座仙山分别由神鳌用背驼着，以防沉入海底。女娲为何选择天台山呢，由于只有天台山才出产炼石用的五色土，是炼补天石的绝佳之地。

因而，女娲在天台山顶堆巨石为炉，取五色土为料，又借来太阳神火，历时九天九夜，炼就了五色巨石36501块。然后又历时九天九夜，用36500块五彩石将天补好。剩下的一块遗留在天台山中汤谷的山顶上。

天是补好了，但是却找不到支撑四极的柱子。要是没有柱子支撑，天就会塌下来。情急之下，女娲只好将背负天台山之神鳌的四只足砍下来支撑四极。但是天台山要是没有神鳌的负载，就会沉入海底，因而女娲将天台山移到东海之滨的琅琊，就为今天日照市涛雒镇一带。至今天台山上仍然留有女娲补天台、补天台下有被斩了足的神鳌和补天剩下的五彩石，后人称之为太阳神石。 女娲补天之后，天地定位，洪水归道，烈火熄灭，四海宁静。人们在天台山手舞足蹈，欢庆补天成功，同时在山下建立女娲庙，世代供奉，朝拜者络绎不绝，香火不断。 这那么著名的神话故事反映了我国古代劳动人民与大自然抗争的不屈不挠的精神：女娲挺身而出、救民于水火的高尚，这源自人类渴望制服自然、制造美妙生活的愿望。

checked. Savage beasts devoured innocent people; vicious birds preyed on the weak and old.

Then Nü Wa melted rocks of five colours and used them to mend the cracks in the sky. She supported the four corners of the sky with the legs she had cut off from a giant turtle. She killed the black dragon to save the people of Jizhou, and blocked the flood with the ashes of reeds.

Thus the sky was mended, its four corners lifted, the flood tamed, Jizhou pacified, and harmful birds and beasts killed, and the innocent people were able to live on the square earth under the dome of the sky. It was a time when birds, beasts, insects and snakes no longer used their claws or teeth or poisonous stings, for they did not want to catch or eat weaker things.

Burning fire, widespread and violent, never ceased;

oushing water, extensive and boundless, never receded.

the kind and the honest were devoured by cruel beasts,

the weak and the elder were captured by fierce birds.

broke off the giant turtles legs as four pillars to prop the sky,
