Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents. It is the late spring of 1979, a hot, sticky Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of us sit together, side by side, in rows of wooden folding chairs on the main campus lawn. We hear the blue nylon robes. We listen impatiently to long speeches. When the ceremony is over, we throw our caps in the air, and we are officially graduated from college, the senior class of Brandeis University in the city of Waltham, Massachusetts. For many of us, the curtain has just come down on childhood.
Afterward, I find Morrie Schwartz, our favorite professor, and introduce him to my parents. He is a small man who takes small steps, as if a strong wind could, at any time, sweep him up into the clouds. In his graduation day robe, he looks like a cross between a biblical prophet (先知) and a Christmas spirit. He has sparkling blue eyes, thinning silver hair, that spills onto his forehead, bid ears, a triangular nose, and tufts (一簇) of graying eyebrows. In the early 1950s, researchers found that people scored lower on intelligence tests if they spoke more than one language. Research in 1960s found the opposite. Bilingual(双语的) people scored higher than monolinguals, people who speak only one language. So which is it?
Researchers presented their newest studies last month at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The latest evidence shows that being bilingual does not necessarily make people smarter. But researcher Ellen Bialystok says it probably does make you better at certain skills.
ELLEN BIAYSTOK: “ Imagine driving down the highway. There are many things that could capture your attention and you really need to be monitor all of them. Why would bilingualism make you any better at that?”
And the answer, she says, is that bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention ------ a function called the executive (执行的) control system.
ELLEN BIAYSTOK: “ it’s quite possibly the most important cognitive (认知的) system we have it’s where all of your decisions about what to attend to, what to ignore, and what to process are made.”
Ms. Bialystok is a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, Canada. She says the best method to measure the executive system is called the Stroop Test. A person is shown words in different colors.
ELLEN BIAYSTOK: “ So you would have the word blue written in red, but you have to say red. But blue is so eye-catchy, it’s just lighting up all these circuits (巡回) in your brain, and you really want to say blue. So you need a mechanism to override that so that you can say red. That’s the executive control system.”
Her work shows that bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to suppress one to be able to speak in the other.
