The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous 20th-century buildings. It has become a symbol of Sydney and Australia.
The base (地基) for the building was started in 1959, years before the designs were finished. It took Danish architect (丹麦建筑师) Jorn Utzon four years to design the Opera House. By 1962 the designs were finished and construction began. In 1967, people started the decoration inside. In total (总共) it took 14 years to build the Opera House and it was opened on the 20th of October 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II.
It cost around $160 million to build the Sydney Opera House and the money was paid by the public. 6,225 square metres of glass was used to build it. The Opera House has about 1,000 rooms. It is 185 metres long and 120 metres wide. The building’s roof sections weigh about 15 tons. Each year, this fantastic building attracts 200,000 tourists to come for a visit or enjoy events in it.
The Opera House reaches out into the harbour. It is amazing and unforgettable, offering people a strong sense of beauty.

This book is Sleep to Win! by Dr. James Maas and Haley Davis. In this book, you can find out how getting more sleep helped fifteen-year-old Sarah Hughes win an Olympic gold medal. She said the biggest change she made in her training for the Olympics was getting more sleep. We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning. This is our first trip to China. All the different smells attract our attention to the local food. We are going to try something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is not expensive but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north.

We visited the famous Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) which was crowded with visitors from all over the world, and bought a lot of toys for our friends outside the gate of the park. Everything is so colourful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will do the famous foot massage (按摩) and then leave for the Great Wall. How would we travel without maps? It would be a bit adventurous to start from Oxford University to London Bridge if there wasn’t a map of the London Underground at each station. In fact, a lot of the early map-makers were adventurers and explorers, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries.
So what did people do before there were maps? Well, it was quite easy to use natural signs like mountains
and rivers if you were travelling on foot or riding a horse. People took small boats down rivers and followed coastlines. And it was much more logical (合理的) to use time, not distance, to measure (计量) journeys: the next village is a three-hour ride, for example.
In fact, in the earliest maps, people didn’t draw landmarks (路标). They drew the stars. It was very easy to see the night sky and use it for navigation (航行). The sky was a lot clearer than today. When towns and cities were built, people drew road maps that gave correct distances and directions.
The London Underground was opened in 1863 and it also used a road map style. But a man called Henry Beck realised that travelling by train isn’t the same as driving your car across London. Passengers only need to know which stations to change at. His new design for the Underground map wasn’t very popular with the train companies at first. But the passengers loved it and in 1933, 700,000 copies were printed.
These days, of course, you can ride a bike, drive a car or go through a forest and know where you are exactly, using a GPS. It’s really difficult to get lost!
