Welcome to the 2012 London Olympic Games!

Archery has a 10,000-year history, when bows and arrows were first used for hunting and war. Archery first appeared at the Paris Olympics of 1900. It was removed after 1908 and only returned to the Olympics at Munich in 1972.

This sport was invented by British soldiers in India who called it Poona, the same name as the town in which they lived.
It was first played at the Olympics in 1922 at Barcelona. Although the rules of the modern sport were developed in England, Asian countries are now the best.

There are two medal competitions for Olympic football, one for men’s teams and one for women’s.
Football was first played at the 1908 Olympics Games and it has been played at every Olympics Games ever since, except for Los Angeles 1932.

This Korean sport’s name means “ the way of the hand and foot.” The players get points by hitting each other with these two parts of the body only. The players mustn’t lie on the floor and no equipment can be used. Taekwondo first appeared at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Peking Opera (京剧) used to sound strange to Dou Yi. The 14-year-old girl said whenever she came across Peking Opera on TV, she changed the channel. Like most of today’s teenagers, Dou loves pop music.
But since Dou entered the Xuanwu branch school of Beijing No. 15 Middle School, she has been studying Peking Opera in music class every week.
Dou and her classmates listen to Peking Opera and learn the basics from professional actors.
“We laugh sometimes because the tunes (曲调) are really hard to learn,” said Dou. But she said that now she would watch Peking Opera on TV.

If you want to reach the richest country in the world, you don’t need to go to the Middle East, just go to the South Pacific to a minute dot just south of Equator (赤道), called Nauru (瑙鲁). Only 8.2 square miles in size, the whole country can be seen from the air as the plane comes down to land.
Nauru is so small that the plane lands in what is thought to be the capital’s main street. The runway(飞机跑道) has traffic lights at each end to stop cars when the planes are landing. The small bus station outside the airport is crowded with brightly clothed Nauruans with their modern cars.

The hump with a great deal of phosphate (磷酸盐) round is Nauru’s wealth (财富). When Nauru gained freedom from the government of Britain in 1908, about 40 million tons of the earliest 100 million tons of phosphate were left.
