M: Am I happy? You know you are the first person to have asked me this question directly. The others dared not because they were afraid I might say “Yes”. They wanted me to say “No” so that they could make up stories about me.
W: What kind of stories?
M: “Brian Sharp, author of over 100 historical novels, lives in a lonely house 30 miles away from Sydney. But is he happy？” and so on, and so on..
W: Is that why you have refused many interviews?
M: I'm tired of being told that I must be unhappy because I'm rich and successful. I'm not unhappy!

W: So how do you create your heroes?
M: My heroes live. They think for themselves. All their stories are drawn from life, my life, my friends' lives, including my friends in many books.

He made the remark when he delivered a speech at a welcome dinner for the APEC leaders.
“APEC blue” brought fresh air to Beijing after days of heavy smog. It was actually the efforts of the local people and some government departments that had resulted in the clear blue sky. Certain roads were blocked. The working schedule was rearranged. The government also cut the number of cars on road by half and shut some factories both in Beijing and in its neighboring cities. “APEC ＝ air pollution eventually controlled，” the Chinese netizens joked. Yet behind the joke is the wish that the blue sky will continue.
The vital lesson to be learned from “APEC blue” is that things can be pushed forward, which will result in the development of the country. How China can maintain a blue sky will be one of the tough challenges it faces in the post－APEC period.
