It was a hot Sunday afternoon and the two of us were heading for the capital city. Suddenly my son gave a shout of pain. He had somehow managed to tangle up (围绕)his small body in his seat belt. I immediately pulled off the road.
I could have tried to stop a car, but they were driving by so fast. At that moment, I would have cut the belt if I had something to cut it with. Then I thought that I could retract (缩回) little further in order that it might work. But if that failed, my son’s little stomach would be squeezed even tighter.
Just then a man appeared. He wore a white shirt and trousers that I’d seen on Costa Rican cowboys and his clothes so dirty that I thought he might be a beggar or worse.
Yet when the stranger reached us, he asked me if I needed help. I pointed to my son and he took a look. He then bent down beside my son, tracing the path of the smooth seat belt with with his rough fingers. After a long moment, he asked my son to bend sideways and a little bit forward. He then put his hands on the belt, controlled it in a way that I still don’t understand now, and my son was free.
I thanked him warmly. I also reached into my wallet and gave him a bill, although his calm face suggested that he didn’t care about a reward. He had found a new way to use his roping skills, particularly those he used when freeing animals. And I had experienced the kindness.

A ship was damaged during a storm at sea and only two of the men aboard were able to swim to a small island. Not knowing what else to do , the two survivors decided that they should pray to God.
However, to find out whose prayers were more powerful, they agreed to divide the land between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruit. But the other man’s side of land remained barren .
After a week, the first man became lonely and decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was damaged and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the island, there was nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these things were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship so that he and his wife could leave the island, and in the morning he found a ship stopped at his side of the island.
The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven, “ Why are you leaving your friend on the island ? ”
“My blessings are mine alone since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered so he doesn’t deserve anything.”
“You are mistaken !” the voice said. “ He had only one prayer, which I answered. He prayed that all your prayers would be answered.”

Who can enter?
Anybody! We encourage students and teachers to get their writing classes involved on Save The Frogs Day. We encourage people from all walks of life to take part as well.

The Japanese poet Basho wrote a famous poem in the 17th century.

How do I write a frog poem?
Here are some ideas for your frog poems:
(1) Find out about a particular kind of frog and describe the world from that frog’s point of view.
(2) What if you found the last frogs alive on the planet? What would you do? How would you feel?
(3) Write a poem that makes the reader understand the importance of saving frogs , or one that makes them realize the danger frogs are in.
(4) Write a poem about any of the threats to frogs.
(5) Imagine all kinds of daring ways in which you could save the frogs.
