Unit 1 Women of achievement
Period 1 Warming up
1.教材分析（analysis of teaching material）
This unit stays focused on the topic: women. Six women with various national backgrounds are featured, and different aspects of their life are explored, like, their social position, contributions and hardships ;meanwhile, their achievements in a wide variety of fields are highly praised. Ss will know better the roles women play in social life, with their（esp. girl students'）self-esteem and sense of social responsibility boosted.
2.学情分析（analysis of the students）
Ss are still familiar with the quality of great people. They must be interested in the topic of great women. They may show various learning skills and strategy. It is easier for them to connect language learning with real life and interest.
By previewing, Ss have already had the background knowledge about Jane Goodall and African wildlife. First have a general idea about these famous women and then have a brief introduction. This is good for the beginning of language activity.

Ask Ss read the introduction of six women and answer the following questions:
Elizabeth Fry: What did she do to help the prisoners?
Soong Qingling: Who is she? What’s her great achievement?
Jane Goodall: What’s her achievement in the study of Chimps?
Jody Williams: What did she get in 1997?
Joan of Arc: Do you know the name of the girl in ancient China whose experience was similar to her?    
Lin Qiaozhi: What’s her major?
Step 3 Talking
1. Which of these women do you think is a great woman?
2. To be a great woman, what qualities do you think should she have? Look at the list of qualities that were discussed when we examined a great man. Are there any other qualities that you would like to add?
