Rapid agricultural and industrial development plus huge population has meant that not only is the amount of water taken from the river rising but the waste, especially untreated human and industrial sewage, being put back into the river has also been increasing. The pollution of the river has
10、resulted in unsafe drinking water which has led to health problems for people living near the river. It has also had harmful effects on the ecology of the area, killing many plants and animals. Thankfully, many people have recognized the importance of protecting the Yangtze River and many environme
11、ntal organizations and projects have been set up. The Green River organization educates and advises people on the importance of protecting the river. It also watches the river and stops the illegal hunting of animals. Two special government projects are also under way to protect the river. The wate
12、r and soil preservation project resulted in farmers replacing the crops on their farmland with trees or grassland. The second environmental project includes a nature reserve in Zhenjiang for white-flag dolphins. Boats are prohibited from entering this area in order to keep the dolphins safe. With the efforts of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, the environmental situation of the Yangtze River is slowly improving
