39、input control sectionoperates just like an up/down counter.The output ofthis counter is decoded to turn on a single electronicswitch connecting a point on the resistor array to thewiper output.Under the proper conditions the contentsof the counter can be stored in nonvolatile memoryand retained for

40、future use.The resistor array is com-prised of 99 individual resistors connected in series.Ateither end of the array and between each resistor is anelectronic switch that transfers the potential at thatpoint to the wiper.The wiper,when at either fixed terminal,acts like itsmechanical equivalent and

41、does not move beyond thelast position.That is,the counter does not wraparound when clocked to either extreme.The electronic switches on the device operate in a“make before break”mode when the wiper changestap positions.If the wiper is moved several positions,multiple taps are connected to the wiper

42、for tIW(INC toVW/RW change).The RTOTAL value for the device cantemporarily be reduced by a significant amount if thewiper is moved several positions.When the device is powered-down,the last wiper posi-tion stored will be maintained in the nonvolatile mem-ory.When power is restored,the contents of th

45、INCwill increment or decrement(depending on the state ofthe U/D input)a seven-bit counter.The output of thiscounter is decoded to select one of one-hundred wiperpositions along the resistive array.The value of the counter is stored in nonvolatile mem-ory whenever CS transitions HIGH while the INC in

46、putis also HIGH.The system may select the X9Cxxx,move the wiper,and deselect the device without having to store the lat-est wiper position in nonvolatile memory.After thewiper movement is performed as described above andonce the new position is reached,the system mustkeep INC LOW while taking CS HIG
