Ma Yun--Pioneer of China's e-commerce
Attractive and energetic, Ma Yun is nicknamed "Crazy Jack Ma" and is seen as China's version of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, according to the Associated Press(美联社).Ma isn't just popular because of his wealth. He also possesses good communication skills that allow him to communicate with audiences from a wide variety of cultures through roadshows and TV interviews. And his story of starting an online trading empire from scratch already makes him an inspiration to millions across China.
Jack Ma is founder and chairman of Alibaba (阿里巴巴) Group. Ma was born in a common family in Hangzhou on September 10, 1964. When he was young, he whose homework was never good said that he was not a clever person. But he was an English enthusiast. Starting at age 12, Ma says he awoke at 5 am to walk or bicycle to Hangzhou's main hotel so he could practice his English with foreign tourists. He did this for nine years and acted as a free tour guide to improve his English.
Ma was never afraid of failure in his youth. Although he failed the college entrance exam twice, Ma finally managed to enter Hangzhou Normal University(杭州师范大学) where he majored in English. While at school, he was elected student chairman. He graduated in 1988 and taught English for years at the Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Engineering.
Not only did Ma experience frustration in his education, he also got rejected while finding jobs. When he applied for a job at KFC, he was the only one who got turned down out of 24 people. But that only make him stronger. In the early of 1995, he went to the United States. At that time, Internet was booming. However, he got shocked when no result appeared from China when he searched "beer" on Yahoo! He quickly became obsessed with this online information system. And with the help of his friend he got introduced to the Internet. In April 1995, Ma, his wife and a friend collected twenty thousand dollars and started an Internet company. He named his first company “China Yellow Pages”. Within three years, his company had made 5,000,000 yuan. In 1999, he decided to give up his job in the US because he believed in the Internet's business potential when few other Chinese did. With the help of more than a dozen friends who pooled their resources - some $60,000 - Jack Ma, founded Alibaba, a China business-to-business (B2B) online platform. Alibaba serves more than 79 million members from more than 240 countries and areas. In September 2014 Alibaba became one of the most valuable companies in the world. Ma Yun becomes one of the most successful businessmen in China.
Ma is considered as one of the top richest man in China now. He has a net worth of $31.4 billion now. His story is a "rags-to-riches"(白手起家) story both for him and the millions who depended on the eco-system he forged in the digital age of Alibaba.
