Teaching Goals

2. Ability goals
1).Students get necessary information for writing according to reading the passage.
2) Students know how he became great by reading and discussing the events of Isaac Asimov.
2) Students try to write a summary of Asimov’s life in 100-150 words
3. Learning ability goals
1) Students learn to cooperate with others in order to complete the reading , discussing and writing tasks.
2) Everyone can be great person if he/she is devoted to what he/she is good at.
Teaching important points and difficult points
1) How to help students get necessary information for writing

2) with the given information, how students write a summary of someone’s life.
Teaching methods
1） Reading to get some detailed information about Asimov’s life.
2）discussing to build the structure of a summary of biography.
3）writing to practise students’ writing skill in writing summary.
Teaching aids
1)a projector and a computer to show the teaching tasks better.
2) whiteboard to show some necessary tasks.
Teaching procedures:
Step I. Lead-in (3’)
Task : Introduction
T: Teacher gives a brief self-introduction to students
S: A student is asked to introduce herself/himself.
Purpose: The aim is to lead in the subject of the class---biography.
Step II. Reading(13’)
Task 1.skimming-- --question-answering (3’)
T: Teacher asks students to skim the text and answer three easy questions to get the structure of a biography.
S: Students glance through the passage and then find out the answers to the questions.
Purpose：Students get some main idea of some paragraph.
Task 2. Scanning--- blanks filling (group work) (10’)
T: Teacher asks the Students to read selectively about “A biography of Isaac Asimov” and complete the timeline of the events in his life.
S: Students read about Isaac Asimov and complete the timeline of the events in his life
Purpose: Students get detailed information about Isaac Asimov’s life.
Step III. Writing (21’)
Task 1: Discussing (6’)

T: Teacher helps students have a heated discussion
S: Students discuss what should be included in a biography.
Purpose: students get to know what should be included in a biography.
Task 2: write a summary of Isaac Asimov’s life. (15’)
T: Teacher asks students to write a summary of Isaac Asimov
S: Students write a summary of Isaac Asimov according to the structure and the key points got in this class.
Purpose: Students can write a summary immediately after they have got enough information about Isaac Asimov and Ss get to know the basic structure of the writing
Step IV. Evaluation(3)
T: Teacher gives certain criteria about what is a good composition for this class and help them how to evaluate their compositions
S: Students check their compositions in pairs and write down their statements according to the criteria.
Purpose: Students could find mistakes or good points of partner’s writing
Step V. Presentation (5’)
T: Teacher asks students to read some compositions they have checked, and then state their opinions about the writing.
S: Students present their compositions
Purpose: Students know what a good composition should be like by the way of evaluating.
(附：while presenting, teacher should emphasize emotion objective)
Step VI. Homework(拓展写作训练)
Purpose: Students consolidate how to write a short biography.
Try to write a short biography of anyone they like (100words)
Tips:1) make a timeline of events (such as birth, study, awards etc.)
2)with the help of timeline, write more detailed information

教案简介：这是一堂在新课标理念指导下，教师引导学生体验学习过程并进行写作训练的“阅读与写作结合型”课。
教案特点：
1. 教案设计及实施主要突出体现写作训练；
2. 任务的设计由易到难，从初级任务向高级任务的过渡。任务的设计充分考虑到了既要完成课程标准的要求，又要使师生易于操作。
3. 对教学材料进行适当处理，注意到了学生的可接受性和潜能的发挥；
4. 教学过程中，学生充分地体验语言学习和运用的过程。

教学内容：
本课的教学内容是人民教育出版社出版的《普通高中课程标准实验教科书》英语7（选修）Unit 2 Robots中的using language: A Biography of Isaac Asimov
该部分的阅读文章介绍了科幻小说作者——阿西莫夫。这篇人物传记使学生进一步了解了Reading部分作者的生平以及科幻小说、机器人等。阿西莫夫对机器人的看法深深地影响到以后的作家，甚至科学家对人工智能的研究。
学生情况：
本课的教学是在赤水一中实施的。该校高二年级学生的学情良莠不齐。但是通过义务教育阶段和高一阶段的英语学习，多数学生已具备了基本的用英语获取信息、处理信息、分析问题、解决问题及用英语进行写作的能力。
