The Hilton bed is well made up and the bed and all bedding is crisp, clean and in immaculate condition. Hygiene is of utmost importance and all bedding must be washable @ 60C. ? The Hilton bed has a down duvet with a white duvet cover. The duvet is placed centre to the mattress and covers the mattress on three sides, it is not tucked in and there is no sheet between the bottom sheet and the duvet. The duvet does not cover the bed base. ? The Hilton bed has feather this increases with the life as Cotton fibres are lost at a greater degree than Polyester fibres ? Greying of material from approx. 150 washes ? Appearance on bed not as crisp; Duvet covers require a pattern to look sufficiently attractive Specification: Only bed linen in 100 % Cotton is to be used. Mixing of Poly Cotton and 100 % Cotton: It is not recommended to have two different types of Linen in one property (e.g. Cotton for Executive Floor and Poly Cotton for Standard Rooms), as they require different treatment in the Laundry. 1515 Colour: White is the recommended colour as 100 % colourfastness cannot be achieved and variances in shades will occur. Pattern: Sheets should be plain without pattern; Duvet covers often look more attractive with a pattern. Linear patterns (checks or stripes) are to be preferred because they can be woven on a Dobby Loom. Custom patterns in all shapes are possible when woven on a Jacquard Loom – there is a price implication. Accent colour embroidered lines may be considered on the pillow case. Industrial Laundries can often ‘recoup’ shrinkage. It is strongly advised to test a sample in actual Laundry conditions to avoid duvet covers that turn out too big for the duvet. Environmental Certificate Environmental Certificate Oekotex 100 Material Content in Poly cottons the use of ring spun yarn contributes to ‘cotton touch’ feel of the linen. Open-ended yarns are spun in a faster process that allows the use of inferior (short) fibres. The yarn is rougher and more prone to fibre loss, which results in a lower life span. Open-ended yarn Open-ended Yarn: Note: The spinning process used cannot usually be identified visually and hence an independent fabric test institute should be consulted prior to purchasing linen from a supplier that is not on the company’s list of recommended suppliers. Lower strength Less gloss More volume Rougher surface Even or higher shrinkage Higher water absorption and higher stiffness Selvages The lengthwise sides or edges of a fabric are called the selvages. Thread Count The number of threads that are interlaced in a square inch constitutes a thread count (TC). For example the most commonly used sheet in a hotel is approximately 180 threads per square inch. It is made from approximately 94 threads per inch running in the warp – that is the lengthwise direction – and 86 threads per inch in the weft. The total of threads in warp and weft give the thread count: 94 + 86 = 180 TC Generally, the higher the tread count of a sheet, the better the quality, feel, strength and life expectancy of a sheet. Warp / Weft The construction of a woven piece of textile is the interlacing of yarns woven at right angles to each other. The lengthwise yarns are called the warp. The crosswise threads are referred to as the weft. 2222 Weight The weight (surface weight) of a fabric is measured in g/m2; it is determined by the thread count and by the yarn grade. Generally, the higher the tread count of the fabric the higher the surface weight. As Laundry cost is usually determined by weight it is often assumed that higher thread count sheets result in higher laundry cost; however, this is not so: Laundry cost for sheets are made up of 30 % laundry (= the washing process) and 70 % of the finishing process (= flat ironing). Whilst the washing cost of higher thread count sheets is higher, the finishing cost is actually lower than those of a lower thread count sheet. This is due to the following: ? Higher thread count items go faster through the flat ironer ? The finishing result of the fast ironer is generally better (less creasing, less rejects) As a result the overall laundry cost for higher thread count sheets / duvet covers are actually lower despite the higher surface weight of the items. Yarn Grade Yarn is graded by Ne Numbers. The higher the Ne number, the finer the yarn and the better the quality. The mass for Ne 40 yarn is lower than for Ne 30, 20 and 10. A yarn grade with /2 behind the yarn number (e.g. Ne 49/2) indicates a twisted yarn. 2323 Operational Issues 5 Housekeeping Housekeeping ? There is no sheet between the guest and the duvet. The bed is made up with one sheet only, which is covering the mattress. ? Sheet, pillowcases, and duvet cover must be changed upon checkout. Properties with a higher average length of stay could adopt the procedure of changing bottom sheets and duvet covers only every other day or even every third day in occupied rooms – unless soiled. This would reduce laundry cost and lead to an extended life span of the duvet covers and sheets whilst not adversely affecting the presentation of the room or the guest’s comfort. For better presentation of the room the pillow cases, however, may need to be changed daily. ? For easier identification of the correct sizes by room attendants it is recommended to ask the manufacturer to run a coloured thread along one end of the sheet. Alternatively the supplier should be asked to have sheets permanently identified with colourfast ink applied at high temperature. This could include the name of the hotel, the date purchased and the size. ? Laundering of duvets and pillows require special scheduling. If only visibly stained or soiled items are sent to the Laundry, hidden hygiene hazards are left behind and required standards of hygiene are not met. Because of the sheer bulk of pillows and duvets, as well at extended drying time, a schedule should be prepared in co-operation with the laundry manager. This could be floor-by floor wash turns during off-peak occupancy or an ongoing program of a few duvets per day in line with a preventative maintenance program. In any case, a record should be kept in the HK Office ? Synthetic bedding should be available for guests upon request. The following items should be kept available: Synthetic pillows, synthetic duvets, neck rolls, anatomically designed posture pillows, baby pillows. All of these items should be washable at 60’ Celsius. ? Properties that are in regions experiencing very cold winters as well as very hot summers may want to consider having a few tropical weight duvets available to be used upon request for the summer, which could be used additionally on the standard duvet in the winter. Laundry Laundry ? Avoid detergent and bleach in the first wash cycle, to allow any starch or residual chemicals to be washed out. ? Bedding with natural fill (feathers/down) should be washed at 60C using a mild detergent. Tumble dry at low heat. ? Shrinkage should be established when washing and ironing samples as it can vary considerably depending on the laundry and the flat ironers used. 2424 Par Stock in Circulation Par Stock in Circulation For properties with a laundry operating 7 days per week a par stock of 3 (in circulation) is generally sufficient. Properties with a laundry operating only 6 days or 5 days should have 4 pars or 5 pars respectively. Some hotels operate on a very low par stock in circulation whilst maintaining an additional par in store as a reserve. This is a false economy because the investment (which has already been done) can be put to much better use in circulation. With a higher par stock in circulation: ? The life span of linen increases and hence future replacement cost is reduced. ? The quality level of linen on the bed (what the guest sees and experiences) is higher and more consistent because of more even wear. (The linen stays in better shape for much longer) Procurement Issues Procurement Issues The specifications outlined above are done with the intention of setting clear quality requirements that can be understood from everyone in the textile industry whilst protecting the hotels from receiving inferior quality. The specifications are not based on any particular supplier or product but can be produced from a number of competitors. Clear specifications are important to establish best value sources because they allow the client to compare ‘apples with apples’. Prior to committing a large investment it is recommended to have samples of the various competitors (especially if some of them are without previous history) sent to an independent Institute for testing.
